In order to pay for their $70 billion in additional tax cuts targeted at the wealthy, House Republicans are pursuing a two-part package of spending cuts in vital services for American families:
- First, House Republicans are preparing a budget reconciliation package, containing about $50 billion in mandatory spending cuts in such programs as student loans, Medicaid, child support enforcement, and food stamps, which will be considered by the House next week; and
- Secondly, House Republicans are also pursuing cuts in a series of important domestic discretionary programs -- ranging from education to child care to housing to environmental protection. Republicans have already cut many of these programs below the 2005 level -- and it is now anticipated that on the last appropriations conference report of the year, they will add an additional 2% across-the-board cut on top of these cuts.
