This birthday (my 31st) has been very low key, and aside from a couple cards in the mail and some quality time tonight with mistermonkey, it has gone by with little fanfare. But all of a sudden I think it may be a very memorable day, and I would like to say something.
As many of you may know, while I do not qualify as a 'Dem-basher', I am skeptical of ALL politicians and have not been particularly thrilled by what I perceive as inaction by the Dems in the face of Republican weaknesses being exposed. Last year was my first foray into Democratic party politics (from the realm of far-left/independent) and while I am a patient person, I was beginning to wonder if the Democratic politicians, as a group, were ever going to speak for the people who elect them, e.g. the fabulous folks here at DU who convinced me that there was more to voting Dem than 'ABB'.
I just read the text of Senator Reid's statement and his request for a closed session. That, in and of itself, is the best birthday present ever.
While I am too young to have seen Watergate, Vietnam, The New Deal and other major events in US political history, I have learned a lot from people who have seen them, or who have written about them, and I believe that we are at a moment in time which can make a huge difference in what the US looks like and acts like in the future. We are at a turning point.
So on to my wish.
I wish that the Democrats, both constituents and politicians, have the strength and courage to keep these fires lit. That we have the courage of conviction not to give up until we accomplish 2 very important goals: Ending the war in Iraq, and exposing the Bush administration for the corrupt, dangerous criminals that they are.
I wish that Americans of all political stripes learn that it is okay to admit mistakes, or misunderstandings, especially if they are willing to work to correct those mistakes.
I wish that the polarity in US political culture dissipates, and neighbors won't judge and hate each other anymore for their political affiliation, but rather appreciate and understand each other, and that we can all work towards a better future. Let's try to get rid of the hate. Please?
I wish that we have the ability to forgive each other.
And last, as ridiculous as it may sound, I truly wish for world peace. (please don't make fun of me for that one)
I invite you to wish, or pray, or send vibes, or whatever you each do along with me, or to add your own.
