Kerry Statement On Closed Session
Edited on Tue Nov-01-05 04:30 PM by sandnsea
Statement by John Kerry on Closed-Door Senate Session and Senate Failures to Investigate Pre-War Intelligence

“For a year and a half, the Republican leadership in Congress has refused again and again to complete Phase II of their investigation into pre-war intelligence failures. All the requests I and other Senators have made of the Intelligence Committee for more information have been pushed aside. The Republican leadership has been complicit in a political cover-up of the decisions that led to war. Nothing could be more serious or more deserving of full public disclosure. The families of our troops deserve the truth, as does every American. Now that one of the chief architects of the war in Iraq has been indicted for related crimes, it is more important than ever to know how intelligence was presented to the Congress.

“The country and the Congress were misled into war. It is deeply troubling that the Republicans in Washington are so afraid to share the truth with the American people. Clearly it will require an independent, outside investigation to get to the bottom of this.”

If you are going to criticize Kerry, criticize him for voting in Senate to allow Bush's immoral and illegal war to occur, not for Kerry his election to the Presidency stolen.

Enjoy your stay.

12. Um, actually Reid in a way supported Kerry today
as he called for Roberts to finally do what was in Kerry's letter re: the DSM in June, which was for the Intelligence Committee to actually complete their damned investigation, instead of letting Phase II just sit there.

Taking nothing away from Reid, but Kerry doesn't need to fall in behind. He's out in front. A trendsetter if you will.

33. Since June 2003 really
He's one of the ones who got this investigation in the first place.

LEBANON, NH -- Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry said Wednesday that President Bush broke his promise to build an international coalition against Iraq's Saddam Hussein and then waged a war based on questionable intelligence.

''He misled every one of us,'' Kerry said. ''That's one reason why I'm running to be president of the United States.''

...As for the question about U.S. intelligence, Kerry said he has led the call for a congressional investigation and pledged, ''We will get to the bottom of this.''

26. Fantastic! Except for one small thing...
I wish he (and every other Dem) would stop saying "intelligence failure." There was no "failure." The "intelligence" worked exactly as it was meant to by the crooks who cooked it up.

Reid had the right idea today. He used the words "manufacture" and "manipulate." These are more effective (and accurate) words to describe what happened.

Props to Kerry for using the phrases "misled into war" and "political cover-up" though. Excellent. :patriot:

29. Agreed, the passivization is like Nixons'
Mistakes were made. There's no active agent (in the linguistic sense) in an "intelligence failure" Other than some ambiguous faceless agency that just plum broke down, like a broken lightbulb, or some honest mistake.

I agree that Kerry should not reinforce this blame-free frame.

51. The Blame-Free Frame Game
Thanks Professor George Lakoff for framing the "frame" concept repeatedly, and showing me the importance of it.

That type of passivization is so ingrained in the language of politicians, but it really needs to be excised from Democratic politicans' lexicons.

31. Ted Kennedy is DEMANDING disclosure. Please sign if you haven't yet...

http://www.tedkennedy.com/page/petition/iraqdocuments
<snip>
As we know, Scooter Libby and Vice President Cheney withheld critical documents in the Senate's investigation of the use and misuse of intelligence and the abuse of power in the decision to go to war and in the management of the war.

These documents must be handed over, because the American people deserve answers.

That is why I'm urging the White House to hand over those documents and asking you to join me in doing so. We need as many Americans as possible to join us in the next few days to show the White House that we are not letting this indictment be the end.

Thousands of Americans came to TedKennedy.com this weekend and joined me in asking for those documents, let's get 25,000 people to join us today.

The White House has made keeping secrets from the American people a priority, and that has to stop.

The American people know the high cost of this misguided war - 2,000 U.S. soldiers dead, more than 15,000 wounded, hundreds of billions of dollars spent with no end in sight, and a continuing shameful effort by the White House to silence those who try to tell the truth about the war.

We need answers, not cover-ups, by the administration about these serious issues. Thank you for all your support in trying to get the truth.

Join thousands of your fellow Americans and show this is not the end....

52. Nothing nuanced about that declaration. Very well said.
Kerry is not the "outrageous label" type. If he had said they "lied," the Repubs would be jumping up and down over that remark instead of focusing on the intention of the message.

I think Kerry is getting the hang of it. :)
