What's Behind the Ruckus? Read Josh Marshall on the Niger forgery --->
Edited on Tue Nov-01-05 04:33 PM by Stephanie

I think the combination of Fitz reportedly looking into the original Niger claims as background to the Plame outting, plus the investigation into the Niger forgery currently underway in Italy, has made today's Senate rebellion possible. The Dems can't initiate an investigation, but they sure can seize on one when it happens. Now the truth is coming out and it's UNSTOPPABLE.

From Josh Marshall:

The name of Stephen J. Hadley (first term Deputy National Security Advisor and now National Security Advisor) has come up again and again in the Niger-uranium story.

In early 2002 Hadley was tasked with shutting down the unauthorized meetings Harold Rhode, Larry Franklin and Michael Ledeen were holding with Iraqi and Iranian exiles, and Italian intelligence figures including the head of SISMI, Nicolo Pollari, in Rome in late 2001.

On September 9th, 2002, Hadley met with Pollari in Washington. According to the Italian daily La Repubblica Pollari was there to press the details of the Niger-uranium story. The NSC has now confirmed that the meeting took place but claims it was a brief meeting and that no one present remembers the yellowcake story coming up.

In other words, it's a quite hazy denial if it's even a denial at all.

Less than a month later Hadley and others at the NSC tried but failed to get the Niger story into President Bush's October 7th WMD speech in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Days later copies of the forgeries surfaced in Rome.

Three months later Hadley and the same colleagues at the NSC succeeded in getting the Niger story included in the president's 2003 State of the Union address.

6. True
I feel like the Dems needed something concrete to hang their hats on. The indictment is concrete proof. The Italian investigation solidifies it.

3. Coupled w this from a conservative point of view:
Forging the Case for War
Who was behind the Niger uranium documents?
by Philip Giraldi
From the beginning, there has been little doubt in the intelligence community that the outing of CIA officer Valerie Plame was part of a bigger story. That she was exposed in an attempt to discredit her husband, former ambassador Joseph Wilson, is clear, but the drive to demonize Wilson cannot reasonably be attributed only to revenge. Rather, her identification likely grew out of an attempt to cover up the forging of documents alleging that Iraq attempted to buy yellowcake uranium from Niger.
What took place and why will not be known with any certainty until the details of the Fitzgerald investigation are revealed. (As we go to press, Fitzgerald has made no public statement.) But recent revelations in the Italian press, most notably in the pages of La Repubblica, along with information already on the public record, suggest a plausible scenario for the evolution of Plamegate.
Information developed by Italian investigators indicates that the documents were produced in Italy with the connivance of the Italian intelligence service. It also reveals that the introduction of the documents into the American intelligence stream was facilitated by Undersecretary of Defense Doug Feith’s Office of Special Plans (OSP), a parallel intelligence center set up in the Pentagon to develop alternative sources of information in support of war against Iraq.

-snip-

Enter Michael Ledeen, the Office of Special Plans’ man in Rome. Ledeen was paid $30,000 by the Italian Ministry of the Interior in 1978 for a report on terrorism and was well known to senior SISMI officials. Italian sources indicate that Pollari was eager to engage with the Pentagon hardliners, knowing they were at odds with the CIA and the State Department officials who had slighted him. He turned to Ledeen, who quickly established himself as the liaison between SISMI and Feith’s OSP, where he was a consultant. Ledeen, who had personal access to the National Security Council’s Condoleezza Rice and Stephen Hadley and was also a confidant of Vice President Cheney, was well placed to circumvent the obstruction coming from the CIA and State.

8. No, this move today was brilliant in so many ways.
It exposed in prime time that a republican cabal so interested in issuing a monumentally important report has done nothing for 18 months.

It comes tied with a nice ribbon to the indictment.

Now, not only do they HAVE to do the investigation, they got the worst possible addition of a democrat three-some looking at their every move.

A definite date has been set that they must comply with. Only 2 weeks away. This will keep it in the news all this month.

And the worst thing, everyone in the world will be watching every detail with scrutiny like never before.

Coffee anyone ?

10. Amazing, and yet
How many times has it happened? We have been consistently two years ahead of mainstream news here at DU. I want to see the movie!

Check out part two of Marshall's story:

11. I'm absolutely sure YOU would enjoy the hell out of it Stephanie
Been watching/reading your posts and pic posts (my wife said, "Hey Stephanie's been posting the coolest pics lately on the DU, have you noticed?") and yours are SPOT ON :)

The preview actually doesn't do the film justice, it's anchored around the Downing Street Minutes hearing which I filmed in DC, and the Waxman ex CIA hearings, AND some of the greatest clips on these subjects from the tube.. Jon Stewart pops in now and again to SLAY a right winger, doesn't seem like a 150 minutes long, I get absorbed myself and *I* had to spend the time EDITING the damn thing :)

Thought I'd be sick of it by then, but I still like watching it - FULL of info..

I'm going to get a copy into the hands of every Senator that wants to know the Chronology, and it DOES show the intersection of the PNAC ala Rockafeller, Reid's comments are PROVEN in this film..

Thanks for all you post here on the DU
