Recent proposals by Northwest Airlines to outsource the jobs of at least 3,000 flight attendants that work on flights leaving U.S. airspace to non-union, foreign-nationals threatens all flight attendant jobs. If Northwest Airlines is successful in its efforts, then they will be the first domino to fall. We all know that all airlines will attempt to do the same thing - thereby risking untold thousands of our jobs.
Not only does such a proposal threaten our jobs, but it also raises serious questions about the overall safety and security of our aviation system. How can we be assured that these foreign nationals are receiving adequate levels of training to ensure that they can act in an emergency situation as we have been trained to do? Also, how can TSA conduct adequate security and background checks on these individuals? There are serious safety and security issues that must be addressed by the FAA and TSA to make sure that the U.S. aviation system is not seriously jeopardized before an airline is allowed to conduct wholescale outsourcing our our jobs.
AFA has been working with Congress to send a message to Northwest that they cannot do this. Representatives Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) and Jim Ramstad (R-MN) have prepared a letter to Northwest management urging them to reconsider this proposal. Please contact your member of Congress and urge them to sign-on to this letter to Northwest management....to help protect all our jobs.
