7. He's largely correct
The country has a native population, but it has a very large proportion of people who trace their ancestry to Spain, Italy, Germany and Eastern Europe (Buenos Aires has one of the largest Jewish communities in the world - including some of my family).

Visit Buenos Aires and you'll feel like you're in Paris or Rome.

21. True
I was only commenting on the fact that the country is largely of European stock. What Matthews said that was offensive, however, was that it should have been more successfully economically because it is more "European" than the rest of South America. That sort of makes it sound like people of other ethnicities are not as capable or success economically.

17. You beat me to the punch. The actual "native" population depends on
your definition. There are relatively few people there that can claim hundreds of years of ancestory there and a huge percent of the population is either first or second generation immigrants from various European countries. To a smaller extent percentagewise the same is true in Brazil.

8. Tweety clearly hasn't got a clue, Lou Dobbs does though
He claimed something to the effect that this thrusts the administration into yet another big failure where we don't have a strategy for dealing with fair trade issues in the Western hemisphere (that's the Western hemisphere Tweety, Europe has other isses)

10. Oh, Argentinians All Say That
I met an photographer last year who was from Argentina, and one of the first things he said was "we're really not South American -- we're European." Certainly confirmed that stereotype.

What they mean by that is that there's not as high a percentage of Native American blood in the Argentinian population. They're mostly descended from Spanish and other European immigrants rather than from the native population. It's actually a racist attitude, but it's pretty common.

Europeans. At least that's what I tell them when they start that bullshit.

18. Argentinia has a varied mix of racial and ethnic groups and native peoples
For example, there are lot of Eastern European Jews who emigrated there. My good friend is Jewish and he was born in Argentina. His grandparents emigrated from Eastern Europe to escape the Rusian and Polish pogroms of the early part of the century. He lives here in the US now. His family left Argentina for Israel (and left there because of war) and then Baltimore to escape the Dirty War.

24. My brother lived and worked there in
the 1980s and I visited. Maybe I was lucky enough to run into the non city groups. The bottom line is that all of the Argentinian population is not European.

Edited on Fri Nov-04-05 06:03 PM by Fridays Child
...mestizo (mixed white and Amerindian ancestry), Amerindian, or other non-white groups 3%

The above statistics are from the CIA World Factbook.

On the other hand, Wikipedia sez:

Recent genetic research, conducted by the University of Buenos Aires, on mtDNA and Y chromosome has also revealed a surprising picture on the Argentine demography. The research indicates that although the Argentine population is overwhelmingly of European ancestry, around 56% of all Argentines possessed at least some Amerindian ancestry.

23. I am listening to him and if he were smart, which he isn't, he should
keep his stupid mouth closed. He is reporting on something that he is completely ignorant of.

I had CNN on a bit earlier, and Lou Dobbs, briefly appearing with Wolf, really does get it.
