4 Women found Guilty: Murdering my friend John Deselem
Edited on Sat Nov-05-05 09:25 AM by liberalnurse
http://www.whiotv.com/news/5255598/detail.html

A verdict was returned late Friday night in the case of four women charged in a murder at a Clark County mall.

Prosecutors said the women had been shoplifting at the Upper Valley Mall and their get-away car struck and killed 49-year-old John Deselem on July 7th. All four women were found guilty on involuntary manslaughter, aggravated robbery, theft and murder.

And when the judge read the verdicts, the defendants exploded in anger. They screamed and shouted expletives.Extra deputies had to be called in to subdue them. Prosecutors said the women have shown no remorse for the crime they committed and their actions in the courtroom were despicable.

The women have not yet been sentenced yet. They face a maximum possible sentence of 15 years to life in prison.

Here is a little re-cap of his murder.

After all these years, I can't find any pictures. This one was from his brother.

Here is one from a Yellow Springs article:

John Deselem loved poetry. He also loved Yellow Springs. And recently Deselem had launched a grand plan to combine his loves, to make poetry ring from village street corners on warm summer nights.

“I want to see people say ‘hi’ to each other for a minute before they go on to the next obligation,” Deselem, 49, said in a recent interview with the News. “I’d like them to turn off the TV and come outside, to look at how wonderful the world is.”

He grew up on the family farm north of Springfield, Deselem said in the interview, and learned to love language as he listened to old farmers telling stories. He took writing classes at Wright State, where he worked on the student newspaper, and had also worked as a cab driver and construction worker.

Recently, Deselem launched his plan to bring poetry to Yellow Springs four times a week at three downtown venues. He hoped his readings would introduce more people to poetry, he said, as well as build community. Of course, he also wanted to do what he most loved, which was talking to the people of Yellow Springs.

2. Good to know.
Acting that way in court after being found guilty shouldn't help them to get a lighter sentence either.

6. The Deselem family is well known in Springfield, Ohio.
They have a large farm. His father worked in Surgery at the local hospital to pay the taxes.

7. Those four women got the punishment they deserve. To have no
remorse for what they did makes you wonder what our society is becoming.

It won't bring your friend back, but it is some small measure of justice.

10. I went to the article
and it was just the news of it. So John Deselem was your friend? I'm sorry for the loss.
The women exploded in anger? Well OK, we don't often hear of 15 years for "accidents" or shoplifting. But it's hard to have sympathy when the emotion they finally show is anger when they face the consequences of their little lark.
A man died because of their choices.

Sad thing about the news is that the people are real, it is more then a news story to those closer to it.

partying for my birthday......an adventure one will never forget....the Mardi Gras was less festive.

I met him when I moved to Ohio in 1976! A fine soul.

19. 15 years was warranted
Stole a car, committed burglary and shoplifting, then killed an innocent man by running him down in their stolen getaway vehicle. You think 15 years is too much? Not me. This trash got what they deserved. Mr Deselem lost his life.

35. No, I don't think it's too much
I was trying to grasp the reason they thought they had to be angry.

And I noted that a man died, it was not just some lark.

Didn't feel or say the punishment was too much

11. I know this verdict helps you and your friend's other friends & survivors
The system does work and to be honest, I am surprised that it worked this quickly. Around here, it takes months and years to have matters heard.

 :loveya: May you and the others that love your friend find peace.

Here is a little blog from one of "Little Karl's" friends....Little Karl is Johns now grown son!!!!!

http://www.tonyhall.name/2005/06/john-deselem-1956-2005.html

snip>

John Deselem was one of the coolest guys I've ever known. He was like a fixture here in Clark County. Whether you were at the fair, a festival, the mall or a coffee shop it wouldn't be a surprise if you saw him and he struck up a conversation. One of the great things about him was that he never gave you the impression that he had something better to do. He'd talk to you as long as you wanted. I always remember him wearing a white tank top with his hairy shoulders sticking out. The one thing I regret is that the last two times I saw him, I pretty much rushed off and didn't take the time to really talk to him. I just figured that I'd see him around some other time when I had more time or was in a more social mood. The things you take for granted.

And that's another thing, John Deselem was such a social guy. My first memories of him are from our class trip to Gettysburg. John was a chaperone because his son Karl was on the trip. John made that trip a blast. He made us laugh and pissed off the teachers more than we did. I just remember thinking that Karl had the coolest dad ever after that trip. After moving back to Ohio from California, I remember going to the Strange Brew coffee shop and seeing him do a poetry reading.

It usually doesn't bother me much when people I don't know very well die, but this is different. To say he was a character is an huge understatement. I consider John Deselem a friend and I'm going to miss not seeing him at the Corn Festival this year.

32. Thanks for the update
Though it doesn't bring your friend back, at least justice is served. Hopefully these women will learn something and make an attempt to turn their lives around.

This sort of grab & run shoplifting is fairly common at the large department stores, and it sends a message to the thugs who commit these crimes that there's a price to pay if someone is hurt in the process.

As for their complaints about going to jail when they have children, it definitely sounds as though those children will be better off with someone else raising them. Here's hoping they get caring, non-criminal parents to take over their care.

they killed him while driving away from another crime they committed they would get more time, i would think that would be considered "Special circumstances" . I'm sorry for your loss liberalnurse, it's an awful situation.

23. I'm glad for the conviction.
Four more vile pieces of crap off the street. Four more leeches we won't have to deal with any longer.

I may be a liberal, but on the subject of law and order I make some conservatves look very wishy-washy. Criminals have done a lot of damage to my life, so I have very draconian ideas on how they should be dealt with. 15 years isn't enough. Fucking scum.

24. It sounds like the convicted women are mentally ill
How can you accidentally kill someone and not show any remorse? Well, perhaps they can be reformed in some way. I don't know. Though, if their behavior in the court room is typical for them, we don't need them in society. Why not lock them up for life.

Edited on Sat Nov-05-05 11:42 AM by ohio_liberal
Have you ever met one of those "it's all about me, me, me" types of people? There's a difference between knowing something you did is wrong legally and/or morally and feeling remorse for that behavior.

25. No remorse for their actions
No regards for the people effected by the death. It appears the only thing they though of was themselves.

liberalnurse, I remember when you first posted about this. I'm glad that you and all those who loved your friend have seen justice brought forth. I hope all of you can find a portion of comfort in their being convicted.

Thank you for the update on the case.

Nothing will bring back your friend. But at least there will be consequences for their actions--and they won't harm anyone else.

I am so glad that you gave us an update and that at least there was some justice. Quick verdict of the responsible parties does not always happen for the victims of violent crime. Of course nothing could make up for the loss. From what I've read here he seems to have been a beautiful person and the world lost him as well as those close to him. So sorry for you.

What horrible and sad story. Fifteen in prison won't be any fun for these terrible women. I hope the judge can separate them and make them do it "alone" vs with their accomplices.

34. Ohio only has one Women's Prison....unless you are
currently pregnant. They go to Franklin Pre-Release for prenatal and post-partum. Marysville is the Womens Reformatory. They can put them in separate pod-units.If they keep up the rage...they'll go into Segregation for a while.

It's all just fine for me.
