Owning Oil Stock...
The following was just posted to me on another board where we were discussing stocks that we each invested in.

" If you own stock in an oil company you are responsible for the war in Iraq. you are responsible for the deaths of American soldiers and Iraqi civilians. You are responsible for the rape and torture of Iraqi women. If you own stock in any oil company you are responsible for the social injustice being heaped on the people of Iraq. Stop being two faced about things. Your money is more important to you than the lives of millions of people. If you own stock in any oil company you are a supporter of the Bush administration. Oil companies funded the election of Bush. If you own stock in any oil company you are a BUSH SUPPORTER."

Any thoughts on this...

1. I own stock in a Canadian oil company.
This company operates in Canada, in Canadian oil fields. How they supported Bush financially, I don't know, but I'm quite happy (and proud) of my investment.

3. Yes...
Do those people saying it drive cars or use public transportation?

If so, I guess they are Bush supporters to, using their logic.

4. Yeah, your investment could be as small as "fill 'er up, regular!"
Or having home heating oil delivered.

Or using plastic, any plastic, which is made from oil. Tupperware users are BUSH SUPPORTERS, then!

9. Yeah, ZipLock bags and doormats are helping bush!
Most doormats are polyester - - as are all non-wool carpets.

I'm thrilled with my high mpg diesel car, and I'm careful about unecessary trips, but I am NOT giving up my Ziplock bags!

5. Owning stock in oil and defense industry stocks
might make you money these days, but you're contributing to the machine that's killing this country. Microscopically of course, but it's a contribution none the less. You might say, why let unconscious or uncaring Americans make all the money to be made in the stock market? It's a personal choice but I don't think it's defensible for a person of conscience these days. Just my opinion.

6. Do you buy gas, Gyre?
Just asking. It might be a microscopic contribution, but....

8. Own it, sell it for a profit
and do something good with that money like support one of the many good causes out there then you are taking their money and using it against them. An 'investment' doesn't have to mean that you hold it forever.

10. I don't own stock in an oil company but I do get a check each
month from an oil company - I am the third generation to do so. What does that make me.

11. My Dad owns stock in the oil company he worked for
as an electrician for like 30 years.

He voted Kerry, is a veteran, encourages me not to cross union picket lines, and I would seriously doubt had anything to do with the "war" in Iraq.
