Air America + Democracy Radio
Air America radio and Democracy Radio are joining forces to some degree. The CEO, Tom Athens, will be joining the management team of Air America. As a result Democracy Radio will cease to exist. However, two of the radio personalities from the company may be coming to Air America Radio. It is possible that all of you who wanted Stephanie Miller to replace Morning Sedition may get your wish. In his online letter the CEO of Democracy Radio did not say that Miller or Shultz would follow him to Air America; however, it has been reported that Air America is considering axing MS and SM plays at the same time as MS so she may be picked to replace the show. Does anyone think that this puts Randi Rhodes in jeopardy of losing her spot to Ed Shultz. I hope Rhodes can keep her spot.

1. No way is this a good thing.
Now is the time when we need MORE diversity in Progressive talk radio, not less!

2. Unless SM moves east, she won't replace MS
She's live 9-12 EST, and broadcasts from LA (so she's actually 6-9 PST). Somehow I don't think she'd want to be up at 3 AM to be doing a radio show. However, if anybody was going to replace MS (and I hope Goldberg gets his head out of his ass and keeps Maron), I would love for it to be Stephanie Miller. Her show is hilarious (though MS is funnier).

As for Ed replacing Randi, hahahahaha. Ed doesn't have the audience, he doesn't have the draw, and he's not that progressive. He's more like Springer in that sense.

3. Jeez, I am already forced to hear Ed instead of Randi from the 3-6 spot
as it is. (1260 progressive out of Columbus Ohio)

And sorry, if Stephanie Miller replaces morning sedition, I will return to tunes on my way in to work. If Stephanie would stop with the sound bites every 3 seconds, and the "morning show timed simultaneous laughter", I would listen more.

You all reading that, upper muckity mucks from Air America? We want stuff that is more serious, not more of a sideshow with laugh tracks.

27. I also love Miller's show
My local progressive station plays her on there. :D I get all of my favorite's on the local station which is great (they play Rhandi as well). I hope they keep Rhandi at the point she's at now. I think it's a good time personally. I personally like Springer a bit more than Schultz. Of course that's just me.

4. One wonders what will happen to Nancy Skinner
Edited on Mon Nov-07-05 08:22 AM by GrpCaptMandrake
She was Democracy Radio's latest project that I'd heard about.

I guess I was wrong, but I saw DR as a different mission from AAR. DR was grooming and building shows for syndication and sale, where AAR was trying to be a full-service network.

This is an example of market forces working in the wrong direction. Less talk radio development means we're again ceding a greater share of the AM spectrum to the freepers.

That's OK, though. When the market contracts instead of expanding, grow your own! Ya never know what sorts of neat little weeds will pop up in the garden!

On edit: missing preposition found

5. Stephanie Miller is on live at the time of Jerry Springer, not MS.
Edited on Mon Nov-07-05 08:27 AM by Pirate Smile
Edit to add - there are many "Progressive Talk" stations that follow a schedule of Morning Sedition, Stephanie Miller, Al Franken, Ed Schultz, Randi, Majority Report.

That is what I have locally and that is what I stream when I'm at home.

I like it.

Do we really have any idea of what they are going to do or is this all just guessing? Has AAR said anything regarding SM or Schultz?

I know about Maron perhaps being let go but is that all we really know?

To you and the other poster who pointed out that SM comes on after MS and not at the same time. I made a mistake and did not realize it until reading another post. I am not aware of what will happen regarding Schultz and SM. I am mainly guessing and questioning due to the fact that Schultz is scheduled to replace Rhodes in Austin?

is AAR want to ditch MS, so they can put Jerry on 6 to 9 AM, and keep SM on 9 to Noon. I just really wonder about AAR after they sold out Unfiltered. I don't see this situation getting better AT ALL...

And GOD help them if they fuck over Randi...

16. I've thought about that...
...and, ok, at first glance, 5 to 6 AM sounds SUCK ASS! But, think about JUST how many people are stuck in their cars on their godawful morning commute JUST IN NYC at that time! If what's his name (Mark Marron?) wants to quit or not renew or whatever the hell, why not bring HER in to Morning Sedition, along with the other co-host, and make MS air from 5 to 9 AM?!?!?! But me thinks AAR is just trying to hard in alot of ways and overlooks such EASY and SIMPLE solutions like this. And for the LOVE OF GOD, can we PLEASE knock off this HORSE SHIT that Ed Shitz is THE MOST successful liberal talk host?! Ok, so he's on the most stations. Yeah...in BFE markets! Sorry, but # of stations DOES NOT mean MORE listeners! Randi probably has more listeners in NYC alone than Ed has nationwide!!!!!! It's just so frustrating to see AAR give her virtually NO promotion (same goes to Mike and Laura) but plug the HELL out of Al, Jerry and big names that EVERY ONE already knows! The radio pros ARE THE ANCHOR of that network. They NEED to learn that PRONTO!

9. It's possible Air America is trying to become a bigger syndicator
They currently syndicate Tom Hartman who is on at the same time as Al Franken.

It's possible they may do more of that syndication rather than networking to get a bigger slice of the pie.

Democracy Radio?

I know there are still a lot of cities that don't get AAR or Progressive Talk - such as Kansas City. KC does get a couple of hours of Democracy Radio in the morning but that is it (according to my Mom). They need more.

Anything that spreads it around to a broader audience is great.

We will see, I guess.

Have we heard anything yet about Maron - is he leaving or staying or who were they thinking of replacing him with? I haven't heard anything else.

20. One advantage of syndication is flexibility for stations
Air America is based on picking up stations as a branded network dominated by AA programming.

With syndication, stations have more ability to pick and choose individual programs.

So a station might have a mix of talk shows fgrom various sources, and maintain its own identity.

13. Ya know what, GO AHEAD AAR! REPLACE RANDI WITH REPUKE-LITE!
And Randi will probably resurface on Sirius on one of Howard Stern's channels and in the long run be HUGE and leave AAR in the dust. They hardly do jack shit to promote her show (meanwhile, going out of their way to plug Franken and Jeanane, and not to take away from them, they are great talents...but COME ON!) they let their affiliates preempt or not even carry her show thanks to Ed Shitz. It's bogus! SHE is the one who came up with the concept of a liberal radio network and she gets consistently DUMPED ON. What gratitude!

And that is why I don't promote ANY other shows on AAR, expeting Mike Malloy and Thom Hartmann. AAR's attitude seems like "You got the CELEB NAME RECOGNITION?! THEN AAR LIKES YOU! YOU A RADIO PRO? OH WELL!"

KXEB 910 AM in Dallas doesn't promote Randi a lot at present. The station has a new van, and last I heard, it only features pictures of Franken and Springer.

Also, KOKE in Austin just dropped Randi in favor of Ed Schultz. Ouch.

I get in my car, turn on the radio and listen to commercials for ten miles down the road. By the time the show comes back on, I'm at work and shutting the radio off. I realize that advertising pays the bills, but can't they squeeze a little bit of the show in between the commercials??

25. Can we afford this kind of "good ideas"?
Why on earth is consolidation TWO into ONE, a better idea?? "Gee now instead of being able to have TWO radio out lets, you will get ONE..but it's bigger and beefier:eyes:

It's just a power play to remove the lefties who were still on Sirius, like Stephanie & Tom Hartman..

Pretty soon AAR will have too many to do any of them justice, and I would bet money that XM will not give them another "number" on the dial to expand ..

You can only listen to one at a time anyway..

Most people do not even HAVE satellite radio.. More money should go to buying LOCAL radio stations and getting lefties syndicated so they can get a bigger audience, not just a more selective one :(
