How come * hasn't spoken Spanish on his South American trip?
Weren't we told he was "fluent?" Aside from Brazil, he's had many chances to show off his multilingual talents.

8. Not to defend him but the quick and correct answer is "Protocol"
Not the movie either...When the Preznit of the USA visits other countries they speak his language not the other way around. It's not unlike the French and their refusal to submit themselves to letting another language (other than French) escape from their mouths for the sake of national ego.

10. Early on, he tried speaking Spanish to Aznar in Spain
but no one understood him there, so he reverted to English. It was a slight embarrassment, as I remember. He even mispronounced Aznar's name.

9. I wondered that, too. His brother Jebby seems pretty good at it, but
maybe the Little Emperor just can't remember how it all goes in his addled brain. He can only remember his prepared speech he gives over and over and it's too challenging for them to flash it up on the teleprompter in Spanish because he might mispronounce a word or two and offend his Spanish speaking audience the way he's offended those of us who use the English language.

43. yes -- he tried it in France, didn't he!
Blurted out a few words of Spanish, to cover his resentment that one of the American reporters was addressing the French hosts in their own language (and upstaging him, by comparison).

And when he was visiting Canada, he told our Prime Minister (who had been answering press questions in French and English) that he wouldn't speak "Mexican".

18. His Spanish is very poor
If you ever listen to him speak in Spanish you will notice it is very basic. I am sure his understanding is even less. His brother Jeb does speak Spanish well. He probably gets a lot of practice. His wife is Columbian.

I should have gotten that right. He is the governor of my state and I've heard him speak fluent Spanish many times. I do remember his wife getting caught smuggling after a European trip and they authorities sweeping it under the rug.

And when he's drunk, the only Spanish he'll say is the cuss words! Can you imagine DUHbya at some bigass meeting with all the South American leaders and he unleashs a string of profanity in Espanola that would make even ME blush?! I can hear it now! HOLA PUTAS! TU MADRE ES MARICONA! CHINGATE TU PENDEJOS!!! YO NECISITO TRABAJAR TU MADRE!
(I intentionally butcher that! Translation, and don't hold me to spelling ok, goes like this: "Hi whores! Your mother is a lesbian! Fuck you fags! I need to work your mother!" Ok...I've just dug myself a comedy hole here and people are bitching at me in Chinese now!

28. remember this exchange with David Gregory?
Trapped in a Big Office, George W. Bush Wears the Soul of a Little Man

The headline, "Weary, Bush mocks reporter," intrigued me. Bill Sammon of the Washington Times was reporting an exchange which took place in Paris between an NBC reporter and the first born son of George Herbert Walker Bush.

By now America is acquainted with the story of how when David Gregory asked George W. Bush, "I wonder why it is you think there are such strong sentiments in Europe against you and against this administration? ... Why, particularly, there’s a view that you and your administration are trying to impose America’s will on the rest of the world ...”

George Bush answered: "so you go to a protest and I drive through the streets of Berlin, seeing hundreds of people lining the road, waving ... I don’t view hostility here ... I view the fact that we’ve got lots of friends ... the fact that protesters show up, that’s good. I mean, I’m in a democracy."

Having failed to accept, and to address, the reality of the question put to him by David Gregory, George Bush went on to put Gregory down. I think of it more as, George Bush went on to censor David Gregory by putting him down. First, by somewhat delusionally describing the people along the road as waving. Reports are that Bush did not see the protesters except for a few souls along the road who gave him the finger. Second, by using as an excuse to put him down, the fact that Gregory addressed the last part of his question to Jacques Chirac, in French.

“The guy memorizes four words,” Bush said referring to Gregory, “and he plays like he’s intercontinental.” Then, added: “I’m impressed. Que bueno. Now I am literate in two languages.” (One wonders, English and French? Spanish and English? Spanish and French?) (emphasis mine)
