Why is a contribution to a Fund to train conservative journalists tax-deductible??? Why is my tax money going to support the training of journalist-activists for right-wing causes? The form letter, which I received, is "from" Fred Barnes, on behalf of the Institute on Political Journalism, which is part of the Fund for American Studies, www.tfas.org. This letter was obviously misdirected to our house, but here is some of it:
Dear DeepModem Mom:
I'm sure I don't have to tell you that the mainstream media is tilted to the left....
That's why you must know about an exciting program in which I'm deeply involved.
It is called the Institute on Political Journalism (IPJ), and it's part of a fine organization called The Fund for American Studies, located in Washington, D.C....
IPJ students spend eight full weeks in Washington during the summer. They take intensive, academic classes about free-market economics and journalistic ethics.
They also intern at some of the top organizations in Washington, they attend exclusive briefings at Washington's places of power, and hear from important policy makers....
I don't think mainstream journalists even see themselves as biased, because all their friends and colleagues share their liberal views. This is still true even though Tom Brokaw has retired and Dan Rather has left the anchor desk.
I know you agree with me that there's real danger when one side so dominates the news coverage the American people see. It leads to a distorted view of government, and of economics....
IPJ students get to go to briefings on Capitol Hill, at the White House, at public policy groups such as The Heritage Foundation and the Cato Institute, and hear from journalists like Robert Novak, and Kate O'Beirne of National Review....
The Institute also gives its students real hands-on experiences through internships at top media outlets here in the Washington area...Very often, when students come back to Washington after they graduate, they're able to parlay an internship experience into their first job....
Now let me tell you a little bit more about The Fund for American Studies, which started the Institute on Political Journalism in l985.
The Fund...was founded in l965 by Dr. Walter Judd and Charles Edison (the former governor of New Jersey, and the son of the inventor Thomas Alva Edison)....
I...hope you'll be interested in supporting our efforts with a generous contribution....
The Institute on Political Journalism's budget this year is just over $500,000. That's part of a total budget of $5.5 million to run all the programs offered by The Fund for American Studies....
It costs $5,695 to completely fund a student's scholarship for our programs. More than 85% of our students demonstrate significant need and are often awarded scholarships....
Also, the Fund for American Studies is a 501 (c) (3) organization, so your donations are tax-deductible. Plus, we are eligible for matching gifts....
Sincerely,
Fred Barnes Institute on Political Journalism
