Chicago plans high school for black males
Chicago plans high school for black males

CHICAGO, Nov. 6 (UPI) -- The Chicago school district plans to open an all-boys high school primarily for black teenagers.

The Urban Prep Charter Academy for Young Men must be approved by the Board of Education this month, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Mayor Richard Daley plans to open 100 schools in the city in the next five years. Plans for the next two years include a virtual elementary school, a high school operated by the University of Chicago and a high school stressing business entrepreneurship.

Urban Prep would be located inside Englewood High School. Backers say it is aimed at a group that has the lowest graduation rate of any in the city.

1. This is just a question?
I don't have a prejudice bone in my body. I am just asking this question. If they did this for an all white boy school, wouldn't some people call this discrimination. I thought when you are using state funding you cannot separate like that?

3. There will probably be a lawsuit about this
I would think that targeting a special school for a neighborhood or area would be easier to fund. That way the criteria wouldn't be based on ethnicity or race.

4. Yes it would be discrimination.... but
this is being done to correct a problem... not because of discriminatory policies....

The problem they are correcting has it roots in white racism and discriminatory practices against blacks....which have created a perpetual underclass in black neighborhoods.

This type of school is geared to combat the hopelessness and self-hatred that was bred into them by the white racist establishment for 400 years.....Its purpose is to reform/rehabilitate and thus create productive,self-confident young males who can contribute to society.

2. It will be interesting to see what is stressed at the school
and how well the school works with the parents at home. I taught elementary school in a small town, and made sure that I met with each family before school started. I kept in touch with parents throughout the year, and it seemed to help with keeping kids on track.

Then I married and moved to an urban school. I couldn't safely visit the parents as I had before-heck, my husband was armed when he escorted me to school each day! (a murder and a rape of a teacher at a nearby elementary school spooked him, plus there were crack houses across the street from the school). The whole mindset of parents and kids was very different from the small town. Simple things like paying attention didn't seem to be important the few times they came to meetings.

I hope that this special school attracts families that want their children to succeed and who value skills that will help their sons get ahead.
