Please tell me why the debate on "West Wing"--a FICTIONAL

4. Because it demonstrates what a real debate could be
Issues discussed. Points made or lost. Not just spitting talking points back and forth at one another. The idea being that the political process can be shamed into being more meaningful. Showing people what it could be like instead of having to accept the swill they are given.

5. Because of the issues (which are real)?
Maybe?

Kind of like why the novel 1984 is important? It's fiction, you know.

6. You know what I wanted from Santos?
An explanation as to why American drugs are actually expensive. It's not R&D, it's not lack of government oversight, it's goddamned TV ads!

This is the solution: If drug companies want to advertise on TV for prescription drugs, they can't get a patent. If they want a patent, they can't advertise. Drug company revenues would stay exactly the fucking same!

7. You missed the one where they debated Peggy Hill's views
or South Park. Fictional CARTOON characters.

<arrogance on>....because the typical American has about as much intellect and culture as a remote control

9. Fiction also includes the novel "1984" and movies such as "Apocolypse Now"
Just because it's fiction doesn't mean it is worthless.

10. Because of what it says
Edited on Mon Nov-07-05 05:06 PM by firefox
Thirty years ago when Mooresville, NC was the sleepiest of towns the only thing for the young to do was cruise from What-a-Burger on one end of town to Tastee Freeze about two miles on the other end of town. At Tastee Freeze they used to have a sign that said the only reason people buy the paper is to see if it is right.

But in relation to this show, it showed the power of personalities in the debate and how little it took to sway people with a few statements. It showed that people should not rely on the summaries and perspectives of a few men when an underlying knowledge is what is needed.

Now if you read DU regularly and consume much information at all, you probably have an underlying knowledge on key issures. With that knowledge the manipulation by candidates with their speech writers and focus groups is evident. Knowing the facts, you can watch and see which one is getting it right. I only watched a little of it, and it is not what they said that was important if you were already informed. If you were already informed you could judge the sincerety and conviction that each candidate was presenting and how they were employing emotion as well as thoughtherding in their presentation.

It was an example of wit in a culture drugged by television. I think it was important television and not just another injection of opiate for the masses. It spoke to the intelligence of the informed. To everyone else, it just went over their heads.

17. It's not important, but it certainly showed what a Real Debate
might look like.

It was entertaining, and the Santos response on being a liberal is priceless. :)
