White House Keeps Dossiers On More Than 10,000 'Political Enemies'
White House keeps dossiers on more than 10,000 'political enemies'
By DOUG THOMPSON
Publisher, Capitol Hill Blue
Nov 8, 2005, 06:40

The database of political enemies of the Bush administration is not maintained on White House computers and is located on a privately-owned computer offsite, but can be accessed remotely by a select list of senior aides, including Rove. The offsite location allowed the database to escape detection by special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald during his investigation of the Valerie Plame leak. The database is funded by private donations from Bush political backers and does not appear on the White House budget or Federal Election Commission campaign reports.

Bush is not the first President to use the FBI to keep track of his enemies. Richard M. Nixon used FBI files to try and discredit his opponents, including Daniel Ellsberg, the Department of Defense employee who leaked the Pentagon Papers to The New York Times. Bill Clinton used the FBI to compile dossiers on critics like Conservative Congressman Bob Barr and legal gadfly Larry Klayman of Judicial Watch.

But worried White House insiders say the intelligence gathered by the Bush administration is far larger, more extensive and potentially more damaging than the excesses of previous occupants of the White House. Even worse, it dovetails into a pattern of spying on Americans that has become commonplace since Bush took office.

“We’re talking about Big Brother at its most extreme,” says one White House staffer. “We know things about people that their spouses don’t know and, if it becomes politically expedient, we will make sure the rest of the world knows.”

4. While I don't doubt that Bush would hesitate to smear anyone
opposing him (in fact, we already know that he does), keep in mind that this is capitolhillblue, a source that isn't too far removed from the World Weekly News. Quoting information from it could blow up in one's face.

No links to CHB. They MAKE SHIT UP! And it is detrimental to the Dem cause to spread crap like this.

At least put up a warning message.

14. Don't know much about CHBlue
or the reporter in question.

Do know about COINTELPRO.

Certainly the most secretive and paranoid White House, by far creepier than tricky Dicky's gang, keeps dossiers on many enemies and activists. I know that for a first hand fact. A fellow activist was denied the right to fly and hauled into a room for interrogation. She was on the way to an anti-Globalization rally, an organizer in the Vermont Green Party.

I'll look for other sources.

Surveillance and smear is par for the course in the Patriot Daze of GWB and Rovian tactics.

22. Yeah, but on this
They're probably right. The Republicans have kept files on people for years and years. I would not be at all surprised if they've put it on a computer. Makes sense to me. I read it back during the Clinton impeachment, and had read it occasionally before that. They keep track of just about everybody in politics who might move to the national level. Judge Judy, she said SHE keeps a file on people. That's what they do and by they, I don't know that all people in power don't do the same thing.

10. Let Me Get This Straight!?!
Bush is using the FBI to maintain secret data-files on his enemies (the storage bldg. must be the size of TX, no pun intended to fellow TX DU'ers), YET Fitz, a Federal Prosecutor could not gain access to this information thats out here, now?

 Absolutely nuts. Nothing shocks me anymore, sadly. If I were to travel out-of-state and one might ask me what state I'm from, my response will be "the state of confusion."

19. IF TRUE, here is how they BLACKMAIL powerful people to obey!!!
Edited on Wed Nov-09-05 01:13 AM by Nothing Without Hope
Had a secret (you thought) affair once?
Got a mistress?
Went to a gay bar and you are afraid someone will think you're one of *stage gasp* THEM?
Had a date with JimmyJeff GuckertGannon or another kiss-and-tell drone?
Are you a closetted gay or bisexual and ashamed of your orientation?
Didn't pay quite your whole tax bill and hoping you get away with it?
If you did anything that -- legal, moral, normal or not -- you are afraid can be used against you, you are ripe for

BLACKMAIL.

And if the holder of the secret information demands campaign contributions or a particular vote on a bill or nominee or that you turn a blind eye to crimes, what do you do? I have no doubt at all that this material is used as blackmail. I also suspect that especially important targets are ENTRAPPED to provide useful blackmail material.

Unfortunately, this is from Capitol Hill Blue, a source that must be considered questionable. We need confirmation of this story.

24. Or preferential media treatment......
I'm convinced that 1/2 the national media is in this position. Read about the WH honeypot in 1989 and the stuff that was turned up and reburied on the Franklin Savings scandal....

25. Yes, I agree with you. Those were gigantic scandals and were hushed up
right away by the compliant, amoral national media.

Capitol Hill Blue specializes in sensational WH gossip. True, there are clearly some special connections and some valid stuff coming through them, but gossip is gossip. I'm always interested to hear what CHB says, because it MAY be true. But if it's a big, specific story like this one I do want some confirmation before I believe it as fact. My take on it is that this is an all too plausible and very disturbing thing that's being claimed here, and I want other reporters and investigators to take it as a lead to follow for confirmation.

Oh yes, it's very plausible indeed. I've written at DU before on that old but undying scandal of the WH prostitution ring long ago, and how I believe that one of the functions of "Gannon" was probably to do with entrapment (for blackmail) and spying (pillow talk). I think both Bushes probably base part of their power or blackmail and coercion - "loyalty" can be gotten in many ways and that's a fairly reliable one. And you have seen how the amazing scandal of "Gannon" being a WH plant in the press corps and running around inside the WH at all hours was just DROPPED by the media and the Dem Congress members (exceprt for a few idealists like Conyers).

So I do strongly suspect this story about the sescret files - undoubtedly a blackmail "bank" - is true, but I don't feel I can be certain or do anything about it until it is on a firmer basis than CHB's sayso.

20. I wonder if I am on that list. If not...
wtf does a guy have to do to get on it!?!

I worked hard to get on a list like that.

I felt bad that I never made Nixon's "enemy list" (course, i was in jr. high when he made the list, but still...)

Have all my efforts been in vain?
