To the 320,000 people who stood up to the marriage amendment in TX
Edited on Tue Nov-08-05 10:58 PM by Charlie Brown
To those individuals in Texas who made a stand for civil liberties in the face of overwhelming opposition, thank you.

The large proportion of voters who approve the marriage amendments in the bible-belt often overshadows the fact that there are still thousands upon thousands of voters who oppose the amendments.

I'd like to dedicate a thread to these brave citizens.

BTW, I'm getting the figures form the Houston Chronicle, and the percentages are still fluctuating.

Living in the buy-bull belt, my vote could not conceivably ever make a difference in any election.

But that's why it's all that more commendable to vote anyway.

17. We tried. We really tried.
But the tiny resistance movement put up by No Nonsense in November apparently proved to be no match for the thousands of churches across Texas.

And let's not forget what our governor told Texas gays, and I paraphrase: "If they don't like the laws here, they're free to leave."

Disgusting. I'm not too happy right now.

That might even out the vote.

Lived in Dallas for 5 years and Austin for 1. I really don't get it. Texas is Beers, Steers, and Queers. I've met FAR for gay folks in Dallas than in all of New Jersey.

Oh, yeah, right, it's those POLITICAL CHURCHES, I mean RIGHTWING REEDUCATION CAMPS, I mean churches.

38. They got the church vote out. We didn't have a chance.
They can threaten an anti-war church with it's non-exempt status, but come out in favor of bigotry and hatred, and you're just fine.

People talk about how friendly the people are here in Texas, but in reality it's all a freaking facade. If you're gay, or a minority or a democrat, they'll be nice to your face, but run you down behind your back.

Yeah, I'm a little pissed off and bitter tonight. I didn't expect a different result, but still...we've legalized hatred and put it in our constitution.

56. What I ran into with some of the people was pure ignorance
When I'd ask how they planned to vote if they said for the ban, I asked them why. The number one answer was, "it's just wrong." When I would follow up with, why is it wrong to you; I couldn't get a straight answer. The more I pressed the more flustered they'd become. They couldn't defend their reasoning.

I did have one person who quoted Leviticus to me, I slapped them down with the fact that it also says men can't even look upon a woman who is menstruating. If they plan on taking that literally also then they were on their way to hell.

I went and I dragged a couple of friends along.
I had to stand in the line by myself and the man in front of me struck up a conversation. He was a very nice, down to earth African American, recently moved here from CA. I really enjoyed our conversation. When we got to the front, he pulled out what appeared to be a Christian crib sheet. Yes to prop 2, of course. What a let down.

I felt like a minnow in a sea of sharks. The churches sure now how to get their brainwashed congregants to the polls. They can even convince minorities to vote with the KKK.

I don't understand why people give a free pass to bigotry when it comes to gays and lesbians. Everyone says, "Oh, I don't have anything against them," but they can't vote against them fast enough.

Hey, at least I can go to bed at night knowing I did the right thing, like another poster on this thread said. Everybody who voted for this dispicable measure is high-fiving the ku klux klan.

32. I Voted Against Amendment Two Because I Was Pro-Family
If anyone wondered why I voted against the lamentable Amendment Two, it was because I was pro-family. Amendment Two did little or nothing to strengthen legally-recognized heterosexual families here in Texas against the financial strains that are wrecking so many marriages, and because I think that fidelity and monogamy ought to be modeled--because if allegedly "promiscuous" gays can (and do) demonstrate long-term commitments, there is less excuse for heterosexuals not to do likewise.

Plus, the thought of homosexual parents doesn't scare me very much.

Moreover, I also have the older, pre-Moral Majority definition of family. I have at least one gay cousin--he's a blood relative. That Kelly Shackleford person and his allies are not.

Why do the nazis seem to fear that gays getting married will somehow invalidate their own marriages?

And why do nazis think they have a right to vote upon what gays do? Would they like it if gays had the right to decide that heteros do?
