I have watched "24" since day one and like the sitting at the edge of
the seat pace and the creative ideas.

But no one has ever taken it as projecting on real life. On the message board, whenever someone would try to analyze too much and to find inconsistency, someone else would always comment that, hey, it is only a TV program.

So when I hear Wolf Blitzer asking about a terrorist is going to blow all of us and we have 24 hours to stop him... perhaps torture is the only way - my immediate reaction was to tell Blitzer not to take "24" literally.

(Now, the West Wing and Boston Legal and Commander in Chief - that do borrow from real events - this is different.)

1. Uh, hate to pop yer bubble
But "harsh interrogation techniques" have always been used in exceptional circumstances. NOT as a matter of routine, and ALWAYS with a definite measure of career risk. So it damn well better be necessary ...

Sometimes, good people have to do bad things to keep worse things from happening sometimes. Fine. I can accept that. But as a matter of widespread, general and routine practice? The cost is too high. It is just too high.

2. I stopped watching 24 a year ago.
IMO, 24 is part of the Ministry of Propaganda's (faux) push to show torture as a normal practice when fighting terrorism. The writing and acting was excellent (at least it was when I watched,) but I disagree with the subliminal message.

3. I loved the Daily Show's riff on this -- The Hypothetical Situation
Room, where Wolf Blitzer asks guests which president living or dead they'd want to have sex with...

Sure, if someone's got a ticking bomb, or the TV standard kidnap victim buried alive with a 6 hour supply of air, sure, let Lenny Brisco loose on them for a bit. But not every kid dragged off the streets of Baghdad.
