Woohooo! Monica Conyers, wife of John, has won herself a seat on the City
Council of Detroit. Some may see this as a nothing victory. I see this as amazing and restorative of hope in a state that has been badly battered economicly in the automotive and aerospace industries. Detroit and its surrounding suburbs won a series of small victories that I think are going to snowball into something much larger. :hi:

I am still kind of stunned that Kwame pulled it off for Mayor though.

Detroit council gets an overhaul
4 new faces likely to be on board

November 9, 2005

For the first time in more than a decade, it appeared that nearly half of the next Detroit City Council will be made up of new members.

With 52% of the precincts reporting, four newcomers -- Monica Conyers, wife of Congressman John Conyers, Communication Workers of America Local 4004 union leader Brenda Jones, Wayne County Commissioner Kwame Kenyatta and Motown artist Martha Reeves -- seemed likely to join the nine-member.

20. Damn if I didn't hear she was a lightweight.
From someone I deeply respect and admire, who is with us completely on the issues. But she's not stupid, either, and she knows her stuff. Not to dash cold water, but let's hope for the best - and expect it.

has won herself a spot too. :hi:

6. Congratulations to Monica Conyers and Martha Reeves.
Way to go!!!

I did hear this morning on the early news that the F.B.I. was looking into the Detroit mayor's race. What's up with that?

11. They have confiscated all of the absentee ballots. The city clerk has
been accused of processing absentee ballots in the names of dead Detroiters and prefilling out some ballots. We'll see if this changes the outcome of the mayoral election...It sure didnt' help her get re elected. She lost.

8. Congrats Monica!! And as for Kwame -
DETROIT - WTF ARE YOU THINKING???

Admittedly, I am not as familiar with Detroit politics as I once was now that I live over an hour away from the city. But Kwame Kilpatrick appears to be an irresponsible, incompetent boob (no offense to boobs, but they aren't exactly designed to run a city like Detroit).

10. I'm not happy about the Kwame thing AT ALL
Kwame reminds me of the bush admin.

I just can't stand him and was not happy with this election.

I am happy that Conyers wife has gotten herself a seat.

15. I'm with you. Very worried about Kwame.
Not sure Kwame will be chastened. Just the opposite, in fact. But, as a coworker said about Freman Hendrix, when you run a campaign not to lose, you surely will.

16. In his defense....Kwame gave a pretty decent speech tonight, giving
Hendricks the credit for helping him "mature". As a good friend, and fellow duer said to me today, it was pretty apparent that Hendricks was going to sell the city to Oakland County. :hi:

18. I honestly don't think so that was part of the myth
I don't want to go into detail in a public posting but I know a lot of the Hendrix campaign people and have spent the last two months around them on an almost daily basis (to clarify I didn't work or volunteer FOR the campaign)

If anything Hendrix was trying to PREVENT the city from being sold off (IMO) I've heard his stump/ town hall type speeches about 20 times and that was one of the things he talked about extensively.

In addition he actually answered random questions from everyone spontaneously where as in contrast Kwame's were being pre-submitted and then cherry picked.

I think Hendrix was labled as being a closet repuke and an agent of the GOP by the Kwame people but from everything I have heard and experienced via Hendrix and his campaign workers (first hand) that was far from the case...in fact part of his town hall things involved very extensive critisism of both bush's one and two (that always garnered rousing applause btw -- lol)

I honestly think Detroit missed out -- I didn't have a horse in this race per say (although I do work in the city) but I was pretty disappointed this morning.

19. For me...it's two evils. I don't care much for either man.
And I certainly don't think either one was going to be Detroit's salvation.

17. His *ghetto* schtick makes me want to puke
The man was raised in an upper middle class environment (probably more of a wealthy environment) and yet he continually spouts that crap about how he's struggled and how he knows the plight of his poor brothers and sisters --he's totally full of shit IMO

I honestly didn't have anything against Kilpatrick until this election and gave him the benefit of the doubt...but his conduct with "Hendrix isn't black enough to be Mayor" and all the other crap he pulled really turned me off.

I'll wager that in 6 months Detroit will be in receivership.

Congressman Conyers Jr. should now be in the centre and Monica will make a great First Lady.
