Bill Frist writes op-ed: Drawing the line in the sand! Chicago Trib
Drawing the line in the sand

By Sen. Bill Frist (R-Tenn.), majority leader of the U.S. Senate
Published November 9, 2005

Last week's absurd, unwarranted and disingenuous call for a closed session of the United States Senate sent me a clear message: Many Democrats have decided to mock the Senate's rules in the name of partisan advantage. For more than three years, the Democrats have abused Senate rules to impede the judicial nomination process. To do this, they used a technique called the filibuster--a refusal to end debate and vote.

11. Uh, Billy, what about Harriet Miers' up or down vote? Did you forget about
that? Wah! Wah! Wah! Draw your line in the sand, whine about the Dems and just try to use your nuclear option. The Dems can just follow Senate protocol and bring the Senate to a halt. Bring it on asshole.

Don't get me wrong: The Senate is not a rubber stamp. All senators should take a careful look at Alito's record, contemplate it, debate it, and finally, use that information and their judgment to vote on his nomination. As a body, the Senate needs to debate and deliberate but, ultimately, it exists to vote. If Alito has enough votes for approval, he should take his place on the bench. If he does not, the president will have to find another nominee. It's that simple. The filibuster has no place in the judicial nominating process.

12. filibuster is not a technique, it is a legitimate tool
to keep the tyranny of the majority at bay. Of course this won't work anymore, the draconian Repukes will do away with the filibuster if need be.

FWIW, last time I checked turning off the mics of your political opponents while in committee and calling the cops to remove Dems from Congress are examples of absurd, partisan techniques.

Frist will do the perp-walk one day! Yay!

13. Already Wrote An LTTE
I complained about them putting that in the op-ed section. If Frist has a case to make to the people, he has plenty of opportunity, without a major newspaper clearing space in the op-ed section.

His opinions have already been quoted in the news section, apropos Alito. So, today's op-ed was a complete waste of column inches.

He's a tool, and the editorial staff rolled over.

14. That's an excellent point.
He doesn't need the Op-Ed page. He's got the entire friggin' corporate media. But, I also agree with those above who say that he's stupidly drawing attention back to what the Dems did. I think that's a dumb move on his part.

16. Still Doesn't Excuse The Editorial Staff
Giving him those inches is the equivalent of propagandizing. It's horrible editorial judgment.

Even if the media wasn't leaning way right, the fact that his opinions are already known from the quotes in the news articles on the same subject, obviates the need to give him extra space in op-ed.

There is no amount of stupidity on his part that excuses the Tribune's decision.
