Gay cowboys threaten Wyoming
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2005/11/09/wfilm09.xml&sSheet=/portal/2005/11/09/ixportal.html

A film about homosexual cowboys starring two of Hollywood's most popular sex symbols threatens to distort Wyoming's macho identity, traditionalists say.

Brokeback Mountain, based on a short story by E Annie Proulx, pairs Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger as a cowboy and ranch hand fighting their secret desire for one another in the 1960s. The film, directed by Oscar-winning Ang Lee, won the Golden Lion, the top prize at the Venice Film Festival this year and is already talked of as an Oscar contender.

But some residents in America's least populated state, home to only 500,000 people and famous for its ranchers, cattle and prairies, say the film, subtitled "Love is a force of nature", does the state a disservice.

Sandy Dixon, a playwright and lifelong Wyoming resident, told the Casper Star-Tribune that she had never encountered a homosexual cowboy and said those who knew "real cowboys "would dismiss the story as "hogwash".

1. hey I know
why not have some residents of Wyoming tie Heath and Jake to a fence with barbed wire and let them die?? They seem pretty good at that!

Narrow-minded Rednecks

I hope there are lines around the block to see this movie in Casper and Cheyenne - if the owners allow it to be shown!

57. Well, let's see . . . males living in isolation with other males
What could be more masculine?

I'm sure no homosexuality would occur in such a macho culture.

And there would be no homosexuality among pioneering prarie women either, would there, Lynne?

5. The usual joke in those circumstances....
...tends to involve sheep. We Brits have a whole range of sheep shagging jokes we use on the Welsh, Scots highlanders or anyone else from a rural area and I suspect the same applies in the US.

But strangely, thanks to Little Britain the gay jokes about rural areas in my experience tend to consist of little more then copying Matt Lucas and sighing about being "the only gay in the village".

she could be married to a gay cowboy (just as the two men both have wives in the movie), but because of her small mind she would pay the price along with a husband who feels like he has to be married to her.

movie is based on. What a great story. And BULLETIN: it's JUST A STORY!!!

As for no gay cowboys in Wyoming, BULLSHIT. There's gays everywhere. We are everywhere. They probably didn't self-identify because of the propensity of some in the state to torture and murder those that do speak out honestly about their sexuality.

Oh, and MEMO TO SANDY: No one probably ever broached the subject or came out to you because you sound like a homophobe through and through. Go figure...

Edited on Wed Nov-09-05 07:58 AM by ET Awful
is because of the mentality you display and that folks in say . . . Laramie display. In fact, if I'm not mistaken, one of the interviewees in Laramie who commented on how oppresive folks like you are to gay cowboys in Wyoming following the brutal murder of Matthew Shepard for being a homosexual was, in fact, a gay cowboy/ranch hand.

But you wouldn't know anything about that would you?

If all the gay cowboys everywhere fall in love with the beatiful scenery in the movie, they could all move there and vote for Democrats. We'd only need 500,000 of them; that's not so many. Wyoming really IS beautiful, until you talk politics with the locals.

41. The closeted Matt Sludge weighs in on "Brokeback Mountain"
Independent film Brokeback Mountain is being touted as an Oscar favorite by a source to Matt Drudge. NY Daily News critic Jack Mathews predicts the gay cowboy movie, which takes place in Wyoming, may be "too much for red-state audiences, but it gives the liberal-leaning Academy a great chance to stick its thumb in conservatives' eyes," reports Drudge.

<snip>

Here's the way Matt Drudge reports it on Monday:

"It could very well be the last film standing at this year's Oscars," a top Hollywood producer not associated with the film explained from Hollywood.

"There was not a dry eye in the house at the screening at Telluride ," says the producer, who asked not to be named out of respect for the cast and crew of the producer's own Oscar contender. "Watch it come out of the gate at the Golden Globes with super controversy."

I'm the only gay eskimo

And the seals they sing
now (seal sounds)

These cold winter nights
are taking their toll,
I even get excited when
I see the North Pole
See the North Pole.

I'm the only gay eskimo

I'm the only gay Eskimo

67. is there a dixon survey of sexual orientation?

From http://blogs.indiewire.com/andybrodie/

Playwright and lifelong Wyomingite tells the STAR-TRIBUNE of Casper this week that she has never encountered a gay cowboy, and doesn't think it's right for Hollywood to portray Wyoming as a state with gay cowboys.

Her message to the writers of BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN: “Don't try and take what we had, which was wonderful -- the cowboys that settled the state and made it what it was -- don't ruin that image... There's nothing better than plain old cowboys and the plain old history without embellishing it to suit everyone."

Madonna a cultural barometer? Please.

And here Drudge is sloppy: failing to identify the Wyoming playwright or credit the reporter whose work he lifted her quote from. The playwright -- Sandy Dixon -- was named in the full version of the story, written by Deirdre Stoelzle Graves.

I've never heard of Dixon before, and judging from her quote, that's not a fact I regret. Some real genuine ridiculousness for you. I'm sure every time she meets a real-life Wyoming cowboy on the street, her greeting includes an inquiry about sexual orientation. And I hope Dixon reads Graves' story, which includes input from Chuck Browning, a rodeo cowboy and member of the International Gay Rodeo Association who graduated high school in Casper.

rather than trivial issues like the use of body-dissolving chemicals on innocent Fallujah civilians. :eyes:

But we dare not speak its name.

72. Here's a more balanced article on Wyoming's response
http://www.casperstartribune.net/articles/2005/10/31/news/wyoming/06c2ae836d988c5d872570aa00211854.txt

From the state's biggest newspaper. Sandy Dixon certainly doesn't speak for all of wyoming ...

73. LOL! ... I'm not sure it "more balanced" ...
.... when it includes statements like this:

Proulx explained that when a writer places deviant characters in a setting people love, the writer will get a lot of flak.

Deviant? I haven't heard that term used by anyone other than raging homophobes since the 1970s.

77. Well, I said re: Wyoming's response, not the storywriter's opinion
Edited on Wed Nov-09-05 04:19 PM by fishwax
Proulx isn't responding to the "threat" of the movie, she's explaining the response to her original story.

My point was, not all Wyomingites are saying this is a travesty the way Sandy Dixon is.

On edit: I agree with you, though, the Proulx qoute is awfully strange ...

... so I wondered if that was the writer's wording.

86. I see what you mean ... I'm guessing
it's a fairly close paraphrase, though it could certainly be the writer's bias showing through. T

he Casper Star-Tribune, though, is generally a pretty liberal/balanced paper, particularly by Wyoming Standards. A few years ago, they ran a feature on father's day about Chuck Browning (the gay cowboy mentioned in the article) and how several of his family members drove up to see him compete in a gay rodeo in Billings, with his father comparing it to watching his other son (Tom Browning) pitch for the Cincinnati Reds. This may not sound like much, but by Wyoming standards it was going out on something of a limb. The strange use of "deviant" certainly stands out, i think the paper has had a pretty good track record (again, by Wyoming standards) over the last few years ...

Wyoming isn't populated (as insinuated elsewhere in this thread) exclusively by close-minded bigots (though it certainly wouldn't be an easy place to be gay or otherwise "other") ...

74. Cowboys Are Frequently Secretly Fond of Each Other
lyrics by Pansy Division

There’s many a strange impulse out on the plains of West Texas;
There’s many a young boy who feels things he don’t comprehend.
Well small town don't like it when somebody falls between sexes,
No, small town don't like it when a cowboy has feelings for men.

Well I believe in my soul that inside every man there’s a feminine,
And inside every lady there’s a deep manly voice loud and clear.
Well, a cowboy may brag about things that he does with his women,
But the ones who brag loudest are the ones that are most likely queer.

Cowboys are frequently secretly fond of each other —
What did you think those saddles and boots was about?
There’s many a cowboy who don’t understand the way that he feels towards his brother,
Inside every cowboy there's a lady who'd love to slip out.

Ten men for each woman was the rule way back when on the prairie,
And somehow those cowboys must have kept themselves warm late at night.
Cowboys are famous for getting riled up about fairies,
But I’ll tell you the reason a big strong man gets so uptight:

Cowboys are frequently secretly fond of each other —
That’s why they wear leather, and Levi's and belts buckled tight.
There’s many a cowboy who don’t understand the way that he feels towards his brother;
There’s many a cowboy who’s more like a lady at night.

Well there's always somebody who says what the others just whisper,
And mostly that someone's the first one to get shot down dead:
When you talk to a cowboy don't treat him like he was a sister
Don't mess with the lady that's sleepin' in each cowboy's head.

Cowboys are frequently secretly fond of each other —
Even though they take speed and drive pickups and shoot their big guns;
There’s many a cowboy who don’t understand the way that he feels towards his brother;
There's many a cowboy who keeps quiet about things he's done.

85. looks very good
it hasn't been a great year for movies so far and this might actually be a good one. Just hoping it won't focus so much on the "gay cowboy" aspect as much as focusing it on a human drama of tragic and forbidden love
