Visualize 2006 and Democratic victories across the board.
And let me just say this: (I'm probably preaching to the choir) pay attention to your local races! Those are the breeding grounds for tomorrow's bugfuck insane repuke state senator or attorney general or vice president.

The wacko fundie churches fund their little local races, get a toehold, then run other wackjobs. Meanwhile, most people don't pay attention to the little "non-partisan" local stuff like school board and city council.

And they COUNT on you to not pay attention.

The importance of local elections, from a kos entry:

"Intelligent designers on Dover school board were swept out en masse by the city's voters. Eight sane Dems swept out eight crazy fundamentalists.

In Tucson Arizona, Dems took out two Republicans and reverted the city council to Democratic control."

http://www.dailykos.com/

Where I used to live, a really insane fundy (more insane than most, even) got elected to the school board by TWENTY-FIVE VOTES because no one thought she had a chance of defeating the very well-loved school board president, so voter turnout was apathetic.

25 votes. And that school board has to struggle with her "put the Ten Commandments up in every school!" bullshit for three years. Fortunately, they've stopped every single thing she's tried to do. Unfortunately, her little filibusters have caused the board to lose untold productivity in the name of the schoolchildren there. She'll be out on her ass this spring, I can promise you that.

But ONLY because a very dedicated group of local people started sitting up and paying attention after she won by 25 votes. They have since stopped two other bugfuck insane people from getting on the school board, and have kept the very good, rational, SANE members on. (By the way, this little local group has some republicans among them. Moderate, but republicans who are alarmed by this new crop of repukes.)

Now they are moving on to changing the corrupt good ol' boy system on the City Council and I say good for them.

You may not be able to change the world, or even this country or your state. But by God, you can change your little corner of the world for the better. WATCH that local shit.

And here's to 2006! May last night just be the start!
