Natl. Wild Turkey Fed. teaches the blind to shoot turkeys (really)

We sure thought this selling guns to the blind idea was a joke, but maybe this idea’s got some legs. Apparently the National Wild Turkey Federation is doing something with blind people they never thought they’d be able to do: go hunting.

The six hunters got their first chance Friday to practice shooting at the Ouachita Parish Public Shooting Range just east of Monroe.

Each is teamed with a guide who sits behind him or her.

As a hunter holds the gun, a guide looks over the hunter’s shoulder down the barrel and tells the hunter where to adjust the aim and when to pull the trigger.

Each hunter was also briefed on safety procedures.

Jumar Johnson, 29, smiled proudly after taking his first shots at a paper target. He carried around his target, which showed a bullseye hit in the center.

2. This begs the question
WHY, DEAR GOD, WHY?

You can get a better-tasting turkey at the Winn Dixie. We have wild turkeys on our land and I've eaten a couple. Yuk. Gamey and stringy and gross. Ugly, stupid birds. Not like my chickens, who are intelligent and noble.

Now, the Wild Turkey we pour into the eggnog? That's a different story.

I lived there (or in the parish near it, to be precise), and, well, they're f**king gun-nuts.

In 2000, my jr. high school decided to raffle off a rifle and the children would sell tickets. This is right after Columbine, but apparently the f**kheaded a****les in administration didn't see what was wrong with kids selling guns to anyone who wanted one.

So, my mother (I'm proud to say) and one of her friends went out and protested it. It even got into the MSM a little.

She even got the NRA riled up!

Help stop the "Million Moms!" The Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) of Beekman Jr. High School in Bastrop, Louisiana needs your help! The PTO voted last spring to conduct a raffle of a Remington 870 12-gauge shotgun, with proceeds from the raffle being used to purchase new playground equipment. Two mothers took objection to a shotgun being offered as a prize, and demanded the raffle be stopped. They went so far as to contact the "Million Mom March" to assist with their efforts. Please show your support of the PTO's efforts by calling the school and voicing support of the raffle at (318) 281-1743. Raffle tickets are $1.00, and the winning ticket for the shotgun will be drawn October 27. You can also mail contributions to: Beekman Jr. High PTO, 15190 A.M. Baker Road, Bastrop, LA 71220.
So, yes, in a word, Northern Louisiana is a bunch of gun-toting crazy redneck hicks. But not all of them; in 2004, 5,536 went for Kerry.

But he still lost. :(

Make-a-wish made it happen.

7. It happened 4-5 years ago -- They flew the dying kid to Alaska ...
... and the 12(?) year old shot and killed a grizzly.

The kid died a couple of weeks later.
