Poll question: Should Dana Priest be forced to name her source?
Dana Priest broke the story in the Washington Post exposing the secret prisons around the world. Thinking back to Judith Miller who was jailed for not disclosing her source, should the same rule apply?

2. No and here is the difference
Leaking the name of Valerie Plame to Judith Miller WAS THE CRIME.

The CIA having secret prisons IS THE CRIME, but giving the information to a reporter ISN'T A CRIME.

Got it?

14. I understand that and agree
although good luck explaining that to the Freepers.

Then again, good luck explaining anything to the freepers. I've seen they've been harping on this at their site, and it amazed me they can't see the difference.

16. But I think my explanation is simple - freepers should be able to see it
I used mostly one syllable words and very short sentences...just the way freepers like it!!!

22. your explanation was perfect
the fault lies in them not your explanation.

I'm sure there are some that are open minded enough to listen, but I guess I've become jaded about them due to dealing with a few really stubborn locals here.

Sorry to be negative - you rock!

3. This source is a whistle-blower on our dear government...Judy's
was the leaker of a CIA agent's name or the comitter of a crime.

5. Dana is a "he" and no, he should not be forced to name his source.
His source was obviously a Republican whistleblower and authentic whistleblowers should be kept confidential, in my opinion.

17. She is a Whistle Blower for the good of the Country....Miller was an
accomplice (sp) in beating down a voice of dissent. No.

18. I think the investigators need to interview EVERYONE at that luncheon
and find out if they will confess, before going after a reporter. Trent already has said that some Republican could not keep his mouth shut, so the investigation needs to begin with the big mouths.

If they all lie, then leaning on her is an option, but it is a heavy one for the investigators. Remember, Fitzgerald only went after the reporters because the WHITE HOUSE LIED. If the GOP Congressional Caucus and the VP also lies, well, then going after Dana is the next step--but it should be a LAST resort, not a first one.

The judges who jailed Miller did so because she was obvious complicit in the commission of a crime which involved the press. Priest falls into the Pentagon Papers category where the release of the information itself is not a crime.

Priest's case is clearly one of whistle blowing, which clearly must be legal and protected by law. Miller's case is one of criminal activity which clearly should not.

21. Who's to say it wasn't Iraq War Playbook 101???
In other words, plant the story first! I'd be less suspicious of this tactic had Cheney not been involved with the meeting that the 'leak' supposedly came from.

This was their strategy for many, many, many, things! The "leaks" (unnamed confidential sources) have a history of being well-watered plants!

23. Absolutely not, for the reasons cited by everyone else above
Just so lurking Freepers understand, here's the capsule explanation:
Dana Priest: whistleblower
Judith Miller: accomplice
Besides, if you believe Scooter and his attorneys, Miller had his permission to reveal his name last year--she just chose to wait until after sElection '04 to do so. <Church Lady voice> My, how conve-e-e-e-e-nient. </Church Lady voice>
