Those soldier letters...
Fox news just dissed W???? Wendell someone - the White House guy, just reported on W's PR campaign and then in conjuction, reported about the letters BUT made the point that the WH is saying that the batallion leader wrote the letter BUT somehow W was using the same words in his interview that the letter had...

Getting the feeling that the WH reporters aren't going to stand for W accusing the "filter" of the media for his bad image...

1. Maybe we need to directly to "the media"
Why not? Bush is doing it.

Face it people, they have $200mil in muscle money to throw around. They have ten faxes go out to every paper on the planet any time a dem breaks wind. How about turning the tables on Chimpy, and instead of just posting here, we also write letters to the execs and, more importantly, the editors and producers, telling them how badly we feel for them; that we know they are under the thumb and being forced to be a "filter" for the regime, and it is likely not their fault. Be sympathetic..."I realize that in time of crisis, some may feel it is their duty to the state to place it's message ahead of their own integrity. As a career newsperson, I can understand how this must trouble you so."

What do we have to lose? To battle Bush's organized campaign of lies, we need to start an organized campaign of our own (no form letters, please!). Fire back, bullsh*t press release for bullsh*t press release.

4. "gathering" threat???
Edited on Tue Oct-14-03 10:11 AM by berner59
Fox just replayed this story but they included part of W's interview where he said, "like I told americans before the war that Iraq was a "gathering" threat...

Look for that to be the new word..."gathering" not "immanent"...

How snakey is this administration??? And W is just so smug - it's so hard to stomach...

Sorry about watching - I was just flipping around...

6. You're forgiven!
:) "gathering"...see it's good to go into enemy camp and hear what their latest "buzz" words are so we can counteract them with the Truth!

What I would say..."Gathering" my :kick: We've got him on tape saying "IMMINENT"!

5. Actually, the battallion leader says he HAD it written
According to ABC News:

...the commander of the battalion, Lt. Col. Dominic Caraccilo, said the "letter-writing initiative" was all his idea...

Caraccilo wrote that his staff drafted the letter, he edited it and reviewed it and then offered it to the soldiers. "Every soldier who signed that letter did so after a careful read," he said. "Some, who could find the time, decided to send their own versions, while others chose not to take part in the initiative."

Caraccilo was unapologetic, saying that the letter "perfectly reflects what each of these brave soldiers has and continues to accomplish on the ground."

Just because the letters use the same kind of phrasing that Bush speechwriters do is no reason to believe that Caraccilo's "staff" extends all the way to the White House, is there? Similiarly, it's probably just a coincidence that Caraccilo got his idea at the same that the Bush White House decided to do a big public relations push. And there's something about Caraccilo's "unapologeticness" that's so resoundingly yet dismaying "Bush regime."

Of course, that doesn't explain why at least two soliders deny signing the letter. One soldier says knows nothing about it, and he has a fairly good alibi: He's currently in the hospital recovering from shrapnel wounds. I don't think HE'S exactly qualified to claim that all's well in Iraq!

8. The Battalion Leader will be a Good Boy and fall onhis sword
But this reeks of Rove & the Busheviks.

Of course, it's "just a coincidence" that these letters came out at the same time as King George's PR blitz to convince Imperial Subjects that up is, in fact, down.

Sure, and I'm Yul Brenner.
