Two things stuck out to me. Others have noted how the Christian Warrior designated more money to the boys than the girl. Then when she got home, one of the first things she did was blame her daughter for her plight because the daughter didn't pray enough for her. The daughter replied something like, 'Oh, so it's my fault.' Do I have that 'right'? That Christian Warrior has some serious psychological problems that are, as we type, being inculcated in her children.

... with some degree of sanity. But as you went down the line to the younger kids, the effects of living with a mentally ill mother became more apparent. Simply put, they were more like her: paranoid, unskilled socially, angry. (Maybe her illness got worse over time, so the younger kids bore a heaver load than their older siblings?) :shrug: What encouraged me about the kids on this show is that they didn't seem like little clones of their mother. That tells me that maybe they've been able to escape the worst effects of the situation. I hope so, for their sakes.

A lot of this show involves editing out everything but the awkward silences, to play up the sense of people being alienated from each other. But the words the people say... I suppose it's possible this woman is an incredibly talented actor, but I doubt it. I think she really is what we saw: a mean-spirited, self-centered, anger-filled person. And her manic religiosity is not a complete fiction either, unfortunately. There really are people like that out there -- religion happens to be the structure they hang their neuroses on. Scary stuff. She really should be in therapy, because she's an abuser, hurting everyone who comes into contact with her. They're doing amazing things with psychopharmaceuticals these days, too. :yoiks:
