FITZ: Openly Skeptical of Rove as Absent -Minded -Professor
Edited on Thu Nov-10-05 01:42 PM by kpete
By Richard Sale, long-time intelligence correspondent
When Rove testified before the grand jury, he made no mention of his conversation with Cooper, and when Special Counsel Fitzgerald asked him about it later, Rove testified he had simply forgotten about the call and was only reminded of it when a White House colleague showed him an e-mail about it.
According to federal sources, Fitzgerald was openly skeptical of this. One U.S. government official said: “The White House dug around and came up with this plan where Ralston would testify that while Rove had a brilliant mind able to deftly deal with large and abstract concepts, when it came to details, he was the absent-minded professor.”
“What the investigators want to know is why that record of Cooper’s phone call didn’t appear in White House logs,” a federal law enforcement official said, especially since Fitzgerald has evidence that all switchboard calls were logged in, not just some, contradicting White House assertions.

3. Chris "tweety' Matthews claims Rove has a near photographic memory
Sorry can't cite date of show or transcript. (at least a month ago) But Matthews was saying that Rove has an incredible memory, this was common knowledge among anyone who knew Rove, and that the "i forgot" defense was simple not credible.

Can't imagine in a million years that Fitz would be fooled.

15. Here's the link about Rove's photographic memory:
http://www.dallasobserver.com/issues/1999-05-13/news/feature_6.html

Early on, Rove showed he had the brainpower to go places. His sister remembers that the family used to rely on Rove's photographic memory for evening entertainment. "The game was, 'See if you can stump Karl,'" she says. His older brother Eric would read a passage from a book Karl had read the week before. The challenge was to guess which word his brother had intentionally left out.

Too bad for Karl. He's met his match in Fitzgerald, and Fitz has the power of the law behind him.

I would love nothing more than to see an Irish kid from NYC take out that smug sonuvabitch. Word of advice, Karl--the last person you want to get in a street fight with is an Irish kid from New York, especially one that is called "scary smart." If he thinks you've done something criminal, he will never give up until he's nailed you (or you've given up your boss).

5. He knows it's a crock, now he's digging for evidence to "prove" it.
I have little doubt that Fitz knows more about this than Rove himself, or any of the individual key players. He knows who's guilty, and of what, and that the guilt goes all the way to the top. The trick is to be able to "prove" it beyond a reasonable doubt. I'm certain he has a lock on Libby for the crimes he's charged him with, and that he wanted to charge him with more, but wasn't sure he could nail him on those charges. Better to get him on something and make it stick than lose him going for the big one. I'm betting that he's doing the same for Rove, Cheney, and anyone else involved.

4. When it comes to details...
Rove apparently can remember precinct results from elections in the 19th century. The absent-minded prof defense is total bullshit and a good prosecutor like Fitz should have no trouble convincing any grand jury of that.

I'm thinking we'll have even more to be thankful for this Thanksgiving!

7. You know, I don't ask for much in this life
I really don't.

:sarcasm:

At the same time, I'm begging you, Karl Rove: Please, please don't take Patrick Fitzgerald seriously. Just pretend like he doesn't know what he's doing, and be sure and tell your attorneys to do the same. Blow him off at every opportunity. After all, he hasn't been doing this very long. I'm sure you think you can outsmart him, too.

:sarcasm:

>Special Counsel Fitzgerald asked him about it later, Rove testified he had simply forgotten about the call and was only reminded of it when a White House colleague showed him an e-mail about it.<

I'm going to enjoy every minute of this. :loveya:

12. What a stupid thing for Rove to say and Fitzgerald ain't biting!
Rove's completely out of his element on this one! He's been wheelin' and dealin' and liein' and cheatin' for so long that he thought he could just sail through.

Either that, or he's exhibiting a total lack of respect for the process. If I were going before a Grand Jury to testify in such matters, you can bet the farm that I'm going to review EVERYTHING related to it. Anything I'm uncertain of, I would reply that I would have to look at my notes, logs, or whatever to refresh my memory as I didn't recall at that moment....can I get back to you on that (or something to that effect)?

I'm not convinced for one second that Rove "forgot" anything.

14. And, since Ralston did an apparent cover-up for...
... Rove, I hope they start squeezing her, too, and then all sorts of creepy-crawly things about Ralston being a conduit between Rove and Abramoff start to come out and then... the real fireworks begin. :)
