College tuition promised to Kalamazoo Public Schools grads
11/10/2005, 10:20 p.m. ET
The Associated Press

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) — Scholarships to any public university in Michigan will be offered to all graduates of Kalamazoo Public Schools starting with the Class of 2006, district officials announced Thursday.

An anonymous group of benefactors is underwriting the scholarship program called the Kalamazoo Promise. It will cover 100 percent of tuition and mandatory fees for children who have been enrolled in Kalamazoo schools since kindergarten and whose parents live in the district. Partial scholarships will be available to students who enter after kindergarten.

The scholarships may also be used at community colleges, and can be used up to four years after the student graduates. The scholarships will be available to those entering the military after they have completed their service.

This is what ALL students in ALL school districts ought to have.

1. I live in Kalamazoo.
Well, Portage. May as well BE Kalamazoo, it's so close. I lived in Kzoo for several years.

This is an unalloyed good thing. Simply amazing.

According to a friend on the phone when I recited this article to my partner, it's also prorated. It's you entered Kzoo Public Schools in ninth grade, for example, 65% is covered.

We need more of this. A lot more. But this is a great start!!!

3. Universal healthcare and education would put paid to the fundies.
They DON'T like public education. It's the best way to shut them up and shut them down.

FREE COLLEGE. For everyone.

Suck it, fundamentalists. Suck it and swallow.

4. This is people taking things into their own hands and doing it themselves
When the federal government is either unable or even unwilling to give a decent education to America's children, people will decide to go ahead and try to do something instead of waiting for help that might not even arrive. Whoever these benefactors are, I applaud their initiative, but they seem to be a minority. Unfortunately, it seems too many people with incredible amounts of resources won't even bother helping out those who need it most.

8. The rightwing wants to turn public education into a business venture
They want to turn the entire system into a for-profit enterprise where the shareholders benefit from owning the "means of production." What you are seeing here is not an example of capitalism or profiteering but, rather, charity. This is not what those who wish to make money off the system want. Their game is greed, not charity or compassion.

9. true, but they also want the private sector
to ante up instead of the government. i can hear them now "see, you don't need the government because the private sector can do the job just as well".
