Okay, no more Mr & Mrs. Nice Guy
As of Monday, Doug and I will be pursuing EVERY LEGAL AVENUE to get Bill O'Reilly off the air.

He just invited the "terrorists" to attack San Francisco.

As crazy and ineffectual as he is, he just stepped over a big fat line.

NO! We won't let you harvest our children for your fake war.

NO! We won't lay back while you invite terrorist attacks on our peaceable town, you fake hate mongering jerk from the nether regions.

O'Reilly, get a lawyer because Mr & Mrs. Dougzilla are on the case. This will be our new hobby, our new passion. Hope you have the time and the dime because we do.

And we'll spend it with all the joy of drunken sailors.

If DUers want to come to the dance, there will be a page at www.dougzilla.com up and running on Sunday.

I didn't know he was on that station but I will also call them. It is the least I can do. We get to San Francisco as often as we can we love it so much. He really stepped into it this time!

Let me know what else I can do.:hi:

On edit:
Here is a call to action from Daily Kos
<http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2005/11/12/01124/752>

Time to 'Sinclair' O'Reilly

As many here and in other blogs have noted, Bill O'Reilly crossed the line by endorsing an al Qaeda terrorist attack against the United States of America.

It is time to do to Bill O'Reilly what the blogosphere successfully did to the Sinclair Broadcast Group - hit 'em in the wallet. We must notify O'Reilly's sponsors that they are, in fact, sponsoring a radio program that has stated its support of a terrorist attack against the United States.

In the Extended Body I have contact information for the corporate sponsors of The Radio Factor, and a copy of the email that I sent them.

3. You said "harvest our children"
and it reminded me of something I read this week when doing some research on child abuse. (sorry, no link now but if anyone wants one I can go back and find it)

This source said that war is ritualized child abuse. Cultures that do not value their children are the most violent.

18. War should be a last resort. Nearly every war our nation has fought has
been a war of choice. Frankly, I'm sickened by our history, our real history. My school books never told me. No one ever showed me the truth until I got to college. Then I was flabbergasted. Occasionally I'm still floored by some truth that was withheld from me, like the genocide perpetrated on the Arawak and Taino Indians of Hispaniola by Christopher Columbus. Not a single native survived. Columbus was not an American, but he is venerated by Americans. If we are not told the truth of our history, how can we live up to the good American ideals? How can we rise to become that which we hold dear?

78. I agree
we have to face our humanity in order to rise above it. I see no reason to venerate Columbus. Yes, we need to recognize the elements that led up to this country being opened for exploration and colonization but it wasn't all peaches and cream. And then, of course, back then, nothing was. It was a violent time. I would imagine the Columbus thought of the Indians as subhumans, much as slavers did. We need to teach and understand this. We should not villianize these people or venerate them, but attempt to understand them and their time.

As a formerly abused child, I can say that venting and finding productive ways to do that are ample to prevent that kind of bloodshed. It's the individual, not the action, although I believe this country needs to do a fuckload lot more to prevent child abuse. The bastard who did it is a lawyer if you'd believe it.

The sex obsessed Bill O'Reilly couldn't think of any real landmarks in SF, like the GG Bridge. He had to tell al Qaeda to blow up Coit Tower because it's shaped like the penis he will never have.

He hates SF and wishes he could take his loofa and wipe us off the map. (If he wants to give orders to al Qaeda, let him move to a cave in Afghanistan.)

Let's disappoint him, people.

Hi, DU! Keep up the great work.

Well the second ammendment doesn't say one MUST bear arms.

He crossed the line saying what he did about a great American city, San Francisco.

Ya want to yank him by the short hairs? Here's how: Call the advertisers on his show. Call those folks and tell them you will never buy their product since they advertise on that show. If they get a hundred calls, they will pull their ads. If they get ten calls they will think about doing so and tell faux they are considering doing so.

I hardly ever watch that crap so if ya want me to help you'll have to tell me who to call. It'll work if we can get enough calls in to the advertisers, I guarantee it.

34. But, He Crosses Major Lines
Edited on Fri Nov-11-05 10:37 PM by AuntiBush
Lines which defy the norm, and opens-up folks to harm -- major harm. Too many lines have been crossed by O'Reilly/Faux News, Pat Robertson & Rush. These lines have aided & abetted in "dividing us" like never, ever before in our lifetime, not since the Civil War.

They've aided & abetted a criminal org. that's not running, but destroying our countries infrastructure & everything they spur out of their lying, despicable mouths has taken all of us with each and every day they spin on Nat'l television in front of millions of viewers 'round the world that much further from what America is truly about.

I understand when one has "had enough." Remember, it only takes "1" person to stand-up and make a change.

As a history lover/major, no one appreciates the 1st Amendment more then I, but lines have been crossed for way too long & have left a path of destruction behind. One our children & grandchildren will be paying for, and digging out of long after we're gone, sadly, sadly so.

Sometimes one has to "go to court" for the good of us all, when no one else will and again, I would know first-hand. And, it takes a lot of time, money and can be hard on the nerves & health. But, when one feels strongly about standing by their convictions of what wrong needs to be righted, we'll all be better off for it in the long of it.

Sorry for the rant, respectfully "girl gone mad..." Respectfully, my fellow DU'er.

I need to start blogging again... :)
Peace

37. I find this kind of talk a bit frightening.
O'Reilly has a right to voice his opinions. I have a right not to listen.

My mother in law hates Howard Stern and feels as strongly about his antics (her co-worker is a listener) as people here do about O'Reilly. She thinks he is destroying our country and dividing us as a nation, too. Would she be justified in trying to shut him up?

I don't think my child would be better off in a world where speech is more heavily policed. In fact, I already think we go to far.

Just ask the KKK or the Black Panthers.

Edit: Here's what the Supreme Court has said:

One of the most significant free speech/hate speech cases arose in 1977. The National Socialist Party of America (NSPA), led by a man named Frank Collin, announced plans to march in front of the Village Hall in Skokie, Illinois. Skokie had a large Jewish population, including several thousand survivors of the World War II holocaust in Europe. Village officials first obtained an injunction against the demonstration. After the injuction was reversed, the village enacted three ordinances to prohibit certain kinds of demonstrations, including that of the NSPA. Collin sued to prevent the ordinances from being enforced.

In Collin v. Smith (1978), the circuit court decided the case in favor of Collin. The court said, in part:

No doubt, the Nazi demonstration could be subjected to reasonable regulation of its time, place, and manner….Because the ordinances turn on the content of the demonstration, they are necessarily not time, place, or manner regulations….To permit the continued building of our politics and culture, and to assure self-fulfillment for each individual, our people are guaranteed the right to express any thought, free from government censorship. The essence of this forbidden censorship is content control. Any restriction on expressive activity because of its content would completely undercut the "profound national commitment to the principle that debate on public issues should be uninhibited, robust, and wide-open."

The court also commented on the obvious pain that the Nazi demonstration would give to many of the residents of Skokie:

It would be grossly insensitive to deny, as we do not, that the proposed demonstration would seriously disturb, emotionally and mentally, at least some, and probably many of the Village's residents. The problem with engrafting an exception on the First Amendment for such situations is that they are indistinguishable in principle from speech that "invite(s) dispute … induces a condition of unrest, creates dissatisfaction with conditions as they are, or even stirs people to anger."

The court added that:

There is room under the First Amendment for the government to protect targeted listeners from offensive speech, but only when the speaker intrudes on the privacy of the home, or a captive audience cannot practically avoid exposure….

In other words, O'Reilly's show is protected since anyone who doesn't want to hear him can simply change the channel.

We've really been thinking about this, haven't we? Good for us!

The "simply change the channel" argument is one I'm thinking about -- really thinking about, as in coming up with both pro - and counter - arguments.

What if you are a child in a room with your parents' radio?

What if you're at work and your boss controls the radio?

What if you just had the radio on, and this speech was broadcast without warning?

What if it is being broadcast in a shopping mall?

And, the "change the channel" argument sort of doesn't address my responsibility to my community. I can turn the toxic stuff off, but what about everyone else?

onenote tells me (and as he sounds like he has considerable experience, I trust his report) that the FCC won't take this on because it's not about sex/nudity/etc.

But, having described to you that my family's living depends upon the First Amendment, I feel profoundly that a line has been crossed here, and I will continue to work to see that this man either change his speech or be denied access to public air.

It's counter intuitive for a progressive. But, being a progressive doesn't mean, to me at least, that I will allow myself to be abused because I don't want to curtail someone else's rights. fwiw.

On edit: Hey, maybe this is the best example I have, real life. I never listen to BO and never to FOX. They upset me, so I don't, period.

I had Keith Olbermann on to keep me company while finishing up an assignment. Keith aired the audio clip. And, that O'Reilly audio clip was traumatizing. I immediately thought of my three nieces under 10 and hoped, hoped they weren't hearing that someone wished bad things to happen to them, especially using a tone like that. :(

So, unless we get pre-emptive transcripts in advance, this speech does violate our privacy and we can be captive audiences.

/bad English day :silly:

And where is your evidence that the government is behind O'Reilly's program?

there are laws agains government sponsored propoganda. That would be a different story, but first you have to prove O'Reilly is sponsored by the government and not just a private individual who happens to agree strongly with the political party in power.

I know people who would call Air America hate radio.

I'm ready to jump on this bandwagon. And it's because it almost seems as though O'Reilly IS a spokesperson for the government. I perceive him that way. And yet he isn't. So even if we hate how close to the line he treads with his evil, we still have to give him his right.

I got caught off guard. I was more concerned whether or not he violated a law. But the first amendment aspect has taken the wind out of my sail.

Whatever is right. I can't argue with it.

105. Well, I recall this incident causing a big stir not too long ago...
"Shooting spoiled child" skit

In April of 2005 one pre-recorded comedy routine broadcast during The Randi Rhodes Show sparked a minor controversy. The United States Secret Service reviewed and set-aside further investigation or action regarding an April 24, 2005 radio feature broadcast from New York City during the show—Rhodes was in a Florida studio. The skit featured an announcer staying: "A spoiled child is telling us our Social Security isn't safe anymore, so he is going to fix it for us. Well, here's your answer, you ungrateful whelp: (sound effect of 4 gunshots being fired). Just try it, you little bastard. . The implication, according to Matt Drudge, is that the spoiled child is George W. Bush. Randi Rhodes apologized for that skit on Wednesday, April 27, 2005, admitting it was "an attempt at humor ... bad joke." Rhodes further stated "It was a bit. It was bad. I apologize a thousand times." Rhodes also said the incident should be seen as a call for major networks to pay more attention to what she considers the questionable journalism habits of her right-wing counterparts.

Jon Sinton, Air America's president of programming said "We are not under investigation from the Secret Service. We regret that a produced comedy bit that was in bad taste slipped through our normal vetting process. We do acknowledge that it was an internal error and internal discipline will be enforced."

106. That's hilarious!
But, doing an obviously fictional skit where one needs to make inferences is not on par with calling very specifically for a terrorist attack on Coit Tower.

You know and I know that BO was performing. But, the invitation was plainly issued all the same.

The firefighters in this town are *extremely* upset by the whole thing. The Tower is *their* monument.

Edited on Sat Nov-12-05 01:15 AM by enki23
i could be wrong...

now, if we passed a law banning him, or his speech, that would be a problem. if we convince the network that he's too much of a liability to keep around, that's no problem at all. if we can use his obvious fucking nuttery to make fox look even worse, that's probably the best thing of all.

I always knew you were a puffed-up neo-nut, but I never realized just how much you truly hated your fellow Americans until you made the asinine comment about San Francisco.

Perhaps you should consider asking Pat Robertson over on CBN if he has an opening for you on his "700 Club" staff; it would be a great fit for your personality.

Eg: hate-mongering websites that identify doctors on their hit lists.

Remember his weird threats against his nemesis, Al Franken?

"If you cross Fox News Channel, it's not just me, it's Roger Ailes who will come after you. I'm the street guy out front making loud noises about the issues, but Ailes operates behind the scenes, strategizes and makes things happen so that one day BAM! The person get's what's coming to them but never sees it coming. Look at Al Franken, one day he's going to get a knock on his door and life as he's known it will change forever. That day will happen, trust me."

"Ailes knows very powerful people and this goes all the way to the top."

"To the top of what?"

"Top of the country. Just look at who's on the cover of his book , they're watching him and will be for years. finished, and he's going to be sorry he ever took Fox News on."

Mr Walldude and Mrs Frazzledmom are ready to join in. I wasn't really suprised by his statement but his defense of the statement blew me away. It's a good thing ole Bill has "seen combat" :eyes: cause he's gonna need the experience.

On edit.. I sent a letter to our local station that carries Falafal man:

Sir or Madam,
I am writing to express my dismay that you have not taken a stand against Bill O'Reilly's invitation for terrorists to attack San Francisco. No matter what end of the political spectrum you fall on statements like this only serve to increase the danger to the American People and to lower the opinion of America in other nations. I am not an advocate of censorship but a statement like this demands that you take sides on this issue. As of right now until your station distances itself from this so called talk show host I am forced to boycott you. No matter what your opinion is, to advocate the destruction of a major American city because of the way it voted on a recruitment issue is facism. Last I checked Americans were still entitled to their opinions, and to a majority rule without being threatened. If you look around on the web you will see various liberal, progressive and Democratic groups gearing up for a huge fight on this. I respectfully suggest you come down on the correct side of this fight so I can come back to your station
Thank you for your time.
