For me, I can't figure out why they oppose GLBT Rights and why they oppose Stem Cell Research. Opposing this stuff is just plain stupid.

1. So Much Stupidity, So Little Time
I know your "-est" or superlative meant you were looking for a single part - but that is impossible.

Might be quicker to ask if there is any part of the RW platform that with which we agree or find no so stupid.

2. good answer. tough question.
But, there are a couple that truly shine, in broad terms:

Torture
Invade first, even if you have to lie about the reasons why
All things ecological
Tax policy
Faith based initiatives

Ooops. You were right. Too many to choose from.

3. Unrestricted executive power.
They might rue the day that they granted the executive unlimited detention authority.

4. Guns guns guns!
They're hilariously hypocritical...publicly posturing on one hand that they're for gun control while pandering on the other to the Randy Weaver Wannabe Club...

The racism that underlies their stance is pretty blatant...

The "facts" they peddle are outright lies...and not even very convincing ones...

5. Gay marriages.
That has to be the stupidest, most asinine thing to ever be opposed to that I could ever think of. I have never heard one even halfway plausible reason why anyone would be against this. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

:argh:

9. Anything about protecting conservative "social institutions."
As if, because everyone's not a married, patriarch-led, two-parent, 8-kid family, living in a ranch house, going to church on Sunday, keeping gramma in a home, and shopping at Wal-Mart, that the whole of Western Civilization is going to come crashing down.

So this covers:

Marriage promotion at the federal level
Anti-gay initiatives
Lack of sex education, birth control
Faith-based initiatives and lack of sep. between church & state
Tax breaks to the homogenozation stores (big box, Wal-Mart, etc.)
Anything that attempts to limit women to "their place"
All their rhetoric about "values" that really means "order"

I find the individual family home to be the biggest problem that we have. It increases waste, lets old people rot in homes, robs some people of a support system, closes us off to people, and is the driving force for the consumer impulse. I'm into communalism, tribes, extended family homes, etc. I'm not into the idea of "marriage," or monogamy, etc. Nothing makes me want to wretch more than that picture of Jim Bob & Mullet-wife, with the sixteen kids, all dressed up in pilgrim clothes. If they want to do that -- fine -- but the problem with conservatives is that they wish everyone was like that.

10. It's not stupid from a strategic point of view
GLBT & stem cell issues get older non-voters to the polls. *they* care deeply about these so much that they will get to the polls to ban gay marriages (or whatnot) and while there they'll go ahead and vote on the other candidates. And here's the clincher - the older non-voters typically vote Republican when they *do* get to the polls.

Putting GLBT & stem cell issues on the ballot is very profitable way to increase the Republican bottom line in *any* election.

Unethetical, but not stupid.

Sometimes I wish the Dems would pick some issues like that to get the younger non-voters to the polls. (perhaps they do?)
