Does the Cartooning of Leaders lessen their debacles to the general public
Saddam & Kim Jung Ill on South Park, Bush in Just about any venue you choose, Hitler in everything from Loony Toons to everyone else?

We have Mel Brooks lightening Torquemada and Hitler, We have Parker & Stone Cartooning Hitler, Saddam and Osama...

I love satire, but how does it work in the desensitization of a populace?

I'm not offering an opinion here or an answer. Just a question. When satire goes so far, does it boomerang?

1. If you ridicule someone, make a joke of him, you take his power away.
Cartoons that make fun of Bush & Co. make them smaller, less serious. The more we laugh at Bush the less chance he has to make a "comeback." Keep the jokes and 'toons coming!

2. Agreed
Satire is a mighty weapon and has an illustrious history.

Your question is valid, but if I couldn't laugh at them occasionally I'd explode.

3. a cartoon cleverly drawn can cut both ways, into truth or create a lie
i saw one where there was a soldier facing one way with a small rifle caption Al Quita terrorists and a Democrat the other with a big machine gun firing furiously and shell flying and the caption was.. Tom DeLay.

i thought it extremely deceptive and just pathetic propaganda but the Reich Wingers liked it.

7. I'd say good satire accomplishes two things at once:
Edited on Sun Nov-13-05 11:58 AM by Marr
First, it can present a nuanced position in an entertaining way. It can be more precise than the printed word, it can suggest connections without explicitly stating them, etc. It's honey instead of vinegar.

Second, by making light of the subject and mocking them, good satire makes it ok for others to do the same. It takes away some of the subject's power. It shouts "the emperor has no clothes".
