Carter 'Disturbed' by Direction of U.S.

Carter 'Disturbed' by Direction of U.S.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Former President Jimmy Carter, on a tour to promote his latest book, is sharply questioning the direction the Bush administration has taken the country.

"Everywhere you go, you hear, 'What has happened to the United States of America? We thought you used to be the champion of human rights. We thought you used to protect the environment. We thought you used to believe in the separation of church and state,'" Carter said Friday at Unity Temple.

"I felt so disturbed and angry about this radical change in America," he said.

Carter is promoting his 20th book, "Our Endangered Values: America's Moral Crisis," which he describes as his first political book.

He placed responsibility for that moral crisis largely on the Bush administration, citing a pre-emptive war policy, inadequate attention to the environment, and the use of torture against some prisoners.

1. Too bad he and other high profile Democrats didn't
speak up after the Supreme Court handed the Presidency to Bush. There should have been an immediate backlash from our prestigeous Dems both in and out of office back then. Instead people like Barbara Streisand had to speak up and were made fun of my the "librul" media. We may not have had to go through these last five years if they had stood up to the fascist takeover of our nation.

4. I've always loved Jimmy Carter.

I know all Presidents lie, and I know there were some Carter B1 and B2(?) bombers and Star Wars money and probably a few other Military expenditures, war-heads and Black Budget projects that go to chemical and other biological warfare and other things I cannot support.

"Government" seems to be such a monster, But I feel like people can trust Jimmy Carter a little anyway.

5. He was on Charlie Rose recently,
and Charlie asked him if he would ever vote for a non-democrat for president. Carter thought for a moment, than judiciously stated that he supposed that would depend on the individual. Charlie Rose just laughed and said that's why he loved having him as a guest - he wouldn't lie.

And, he only served one term. He's eligible for a second. On just an international level, could the US do more to alleviate international qualms and distrust towards the US than elect a Nobel Peace Prize recipient to the office of president?

It would also take the 'Christian' issue out of Repug hands.

Fun hypothetical, but I STRONGLY doubt anyone could get him to run again.....

7. Well, that's an interesting hypothetical.
I'd vote for him. One of the reasons I'd vote for him is what you said above...he's honest. Imagine that- an honest politician.

8. Fun hypothetical indeed! But Carter's moral caliber is what this nation
needs right now. I would stomp the streets for him.

10. It does my heart good to know there are some people who run for office
that I actually "trust" and believe what comes out of their mouth. Another thread tonight mentions RFK, Jr. I'd like to see him run for office, too. :)

11. I would like that very much as well. RFK, Jr. is brilliant, passionate
about truth, especially environmental concerns, and sincerely devoted to the Greater Good! Like the Carters of the World. Carter these days makes me weep, I so long for sanity and faith and trust in the spoken words of our 'leaders.'

9. Thanks for posting. I love Carter, and agree with him on almost every
issue of 'import.'
