Spreading the 'Light'
Chick Publications produces film showing paintings of biblical events

Many stories can be entertain ing. But only a few can evoke strong enough emotions to change lives.

Such is the story of "The Light of the World,'' an 80-minute film without live action featur ing 360 detailed paintings chronicling biblical events. Set to stirring original music with dramatic narration, "The Light of the World'' is a labor of love for Jack Chick of Chick Publi cations, the Inland Valley com pany that produces a number of comic-strip gospel tracts distrib uted around the world.

When Chick, 79, who became a Christian in 1948 while honey mooning in Canada, began writ ing, producing and selling illus trated tracts in 1960 to tell Bible stories, it fueled his pas sion for reaching others. He founded Chick Publications and established it in Rancho Cuca monga in 1970. His fundamen talist gospel tracts grew in pop ularity in Christian circles and in the past three decades have been translated into more than 100 languages from Burmese to Zulu.

But he wanted to do more.

Fifteen years ago he had a vi sion to make a film that could reach millions. With the help of fellow artist Fred Carter of Po mona and Michael Helms, who founded the nonprofit Light of the World Project in Rancho Cucamonga to help fund the translation of the film into 1,000 languages, that vision is becom ing a reality. The first public screening of the film will take place at Gardiner Springs Audi torium on Saturday.

ah, dear old Jack Chick.

One of my first films was an animated short based on his demented Halloween tract, "Boo!" - wherein Satan is depicted as a pumpkin-headed chainsaw-madman with snake-on-leash.

I got a cease and desist letter which was promptly framed.

He just never gets old, does he? I liked the tract about evolution. Hee.

There's a plethora of strips there.

I like the ones that I find in rest stops and phone booths, though. Nothing beats the feeling of having a truly bizarre Chick tract in yr actual, factual hands. I've got a collection of about 30 that I found when I drove cross-country to visit some friends last year... just seems like they're not showing up in the usual places anymore (not that I mind so much).

Where you can order a Chick Tract Sampler, packs of 25 Chick tracts (all the same tract, though), and lots of other party favors.

Is there a Chick Tract Drinking Game? If not...

Get a selection of Chick Tracts. His Sampler would be fine for this. Put the tracts in a cardboard box. Shake the box and pull out a tract.
