BUSH to China: "BE MORE LIKE TAIWAN!"
Edited on Wed Nov-16-05 12:43 AM by Bluebear
Oh, my word. Smooth, "W"!

Later in the article he says he supports the "One China" policy, which will absorb and cancel out the tiny democracy. Gee, W, which do you support, you can't have it both ways!

P.S. China to Bush: "Who owns you, baby?"
====

U.S. President George W. Bush on Wednesday urged China to move further to allow political and religious freedoms, and he held up Taiwan as a model for Asia of a free and democratic society.

In remarks sure to annoy Beijing ahead of his visit there on Saturday, Bush said communist-run China had taken steps toward more openness but had "not yet completed the journey."

He painted a different picture of Taiwan, the self-ruled island over which China claims sovereignty.

"Modern Taiwan is free and democratic and prosperous. By embracing freedom at all levels, Taiwan has delivered prosperity to its people and created a free and democratic Chinese society," Bush said in prepared remarks for a speech in Kyoto.

3. Oh, jeez (slaps forehead)
why did they unmuzzle this idiot. The State Department must be cringing right now.

I wonder if Bush knows that China is the #2 holder of our debt. I believe it's something like $465 billion, not million, BILLION. The could call in that debt, any time they want to.

Question for George Bush: "What does a 500 canary say?"

Answer = Polly wants a cracker NOW.

Get it, George? Beggars can't be choosers. I know you're just doing this as a flamboyant show of toughness to the world, but if you piss of our debtor, you're in trouble.

20. Oh, they've got junior's number.
China's foreign minister brushed off Bush's comments about Taiwan and political freedoms.

"We have to work hard and not pay attention to those people who talk about this or that, trying to shake our conviction, especially when it comes to our love of the motherland," Li Zhaoxing told reporters on the sidelines of a meeting of Pacific Rim economies in South Korea.

China already loathes Bush, but they use him. His deficits keep their products in US stores.

17. A "One China" policy does not necessarily rule out a free Taiwan....
Since Hong Kong was joined with the mainland, it has maintained a multi-party liberal democracy and free press. In fact, the only thing that has really changed is that its now formally recognized as being a part of China. But it pretty much governs as its own sovereign city-state.

I think a similar situation with Taiwan isn't out of the question. China possesses very little desire to actually control Taiwan. After all, it has absolutely no natural resources to speak of. Much of their "One China" policy is symbolic. They are still miffed that Taiwan officially calls itself, "Republic of China." If Taiwan agreed to drop its ROC title and officially say that they are part of the PRC, then they will both appease the Chinese and keep their system of government and free society.

It's the scenario where the Chinese have to unify the two countries militarily which worries me....
