NO's 9th Ward Reopen to Homeowners 12/1 -- Coroner :"EXPECT MORE BODIES"
Edited on Wed Nov-16-05 11:58 AM by elehhhhna
...You're fully expecting that more bodies will come in once they open the Ninth Ward?

FRANK MINYARD, ORLEANS PARISH CORONER: Yes. And I think it's -- it's going to come in for a good while. There's so much rubbish around that they might find people in the rubbish. DORNIN (voice-over): They already have. And there are still many bodies left unidentified and unclaimed.
SNIP
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE) COOPER: You warned us October 3. When the state stopped house- to-house searching for -- for -- for the deceased, you said, it was a bad idea, that there were more people out there. Now the death toll, it turns out, has jumped by 104. And -- and families are returning to find the bodies of their loved ones still in their homes. How does -- it's got to infuriate you.

JACK STEPHENS, SAINT BERNARD PARISH SHERIFF: Well, you know, you just wonder what provoked that decision.

1. Let me just say this
If I had missing relatives I wouldn't go in first.

What a nightmare.

I guess it would be mostly skeletal remains by now.

3. To be gross

It hasn't been "dry" or "hot" enough for skeletal remains.
I can't imagine the horrors these people are going to find.

8. was this necessary?

some of us know people who died, could you please consider editing some of the gruesome details from your post and allow those who want the science to follow your link

i realize information is needed but we don't all need to see it without warning

(i realize you tried to choose a good warning subject line, but saying "this is gross" doesn't protect those of us who are using "view all" from seeing the rather vivid description)

2. #*@! - they never did an even SEMI-adequate search-and-rescue operation,
in fact they actively PREVENTED rescuers from coming in.

This makes me so angry that I can't see straight.

for doing nothing when disaster struck.

the state is broke & the feds actively prevented volunteers from getting in and helping, although many did anyway by taking the pirogues on alternate routes

the thing is, amateur volunteers may be able to recover healthy people who just need to get away from rising water

but you need medical teams, etc. to recover sick people and the dead -- and fema did not live up to its responsibility to send the teams on time

i know a couple rescued by volunteers from vancouver, doubt they were the only one, usa fed go'vt wasn't anywhere to be seen the first few days in st. bernard parish

when it became clear feds weren't funding body recovery, blanco tried to hire a private firm to collect bodies but we are a poor state and the $$$ quickly ran out, we certainly can't afford to be charged billions by fema for services we already paid our tax dollars to receive

at this point people just want to return, they are demanding to return, i think they just want to know the truth & get closure

as far as i'm concerned, this country has shit on louisiana, that's the thanks we get for drilling your oil and gas and refining your fuel and chemicals, you can all get off your duff and drill your own damn oil offshore florida, california, and all the rest as far as i'm concerned since apparently we are considered to be of no value and are treated as mere beggars not even worthy of scraps from the table, the reward for hard work is to be considered as lowlife, this seems the attitude of the old aristocrats and not the attitude of the america of myth and legend

12. When I heard that the...
rescuers were only doing searches that included knocking on doors and looking in windows for survivors, I knew what was coming.

No one bothered to check inside all those attics and houses that were underwater.

I am so sickened by this.

11. So let's see, last I knew there was somewhere in the area of
9,000 people missing, so of course you call off the search. Unfortunately I feel a very large number of those missing are no longer with us and it seems the government stopped searching just to keep the body count down while people were paying attention.
