So why was the CMA's in Nyc?
I usually don't watch the CMA's (depends on if I care to or not) and I was down here watching "Commander in Chief" and "Law & Order: SVU" and my Dad flipped it to see what was going on with the CMA's and they were in NYC. Anybody know why? My Mom said it was really weird they were there and not Nashville.

1. No CM stations in NYC
the local news in Nashville said that was the reason.

3. NYC doesn't have country music stations (lucky bastards!) ;)

NEW YORK - Spin the radio dial in the nation's largest city, and the choices are dizzying. Talk shows in English and en Espanol. Smooth jazz and heavy metal. Nonstop hip-hop and 24-hour news. Classic rock and all-sports. But AM or FM, one thing remains absent: A country music station.

The exclusionary attitude of New York stations toward country music is perplexing to industry observers and frustrating to fans. Country listeners constitute a desirable audience, with solid numbers in key demographics. New York, in the recent past, hosted a country station with more than 1 million listeners.

Not having a station in New York is "the largest nagging problem for country music," said Tom Taylor, editor of the trade publication Inside Radio.

The Country Music Association agrees. Their annual awards show is being held to New York for the first time Tuesday; organizers acknowledge their move from Nashville to New York is tied to finding a radio home (and creating a marketing arm) in the Big Apple.

9. This won't work. NYC won't and shouldn't have a country music station.
"Country music" is still a dirty word in the northeast (as it should be).

In Maine I'm in range of two of country stations, plus two stations that broadcast hate radio. All I want is a decent oldies station but instead I have to rely on an AM station that's 600 miles away in Buffalo, NY (which only comes in after dark.) The rest of the radio stations around here basically play the same 250 "greatest hits" of the '70s and '80s. (Yes, I think they literally have 250 songs on their playlist that repeat over and over and over and over again.)

5. The last CM station in NYC went Spanish...
...figuring there was more money to be made.

Which leaves the country's biggest radio market without a CM radio showcase. It's not that CM isn't popular here -- stars regularly sell out their concerts -- its just that the various powers that be figure they can make more with something else. Holding the CMA here is just part of an industry lobbying effort to change those notions.

Definitely not their target audience!
