Why now? (Woodward Revelation)

http://www.editorandpublisher.com/eandp/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1001523544

But what happened before getting to this point? It was just a few days before the indictment of former White House aide I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby was announced on Oct. 28 that Downie learned from Woodward that the Watergate legend had his own connection to the Valerie Plame case.

"It was getting near the time of the indictments and he came to me because he thought I should know,"
Downie told E&P today, adding that he did not initially show his disappointment in not knowing the information earlier because he had to decide how to proceed. "This was important information to have, and we needed to decide ho to use it. The important thing was to decide what to do. There were all sorts of journalistic questions -- whether this affected our reporting and what we should be doing as a result."

Downie said he immediately put Woodward in touch with Post attorneys so that they would know about his information in case any subpoenas were forthcoming. None ever materialized, but Fitzgerald did request Woodward's testimony shortly afterward, although Downie does not recall exactly when.

"We had to decide what to do as a result," Downie added, saying he was told at the time the identity of the source. "We looked at the circumstances under which he had been told and if we were still bounded by the confidentiality agreement, which we were."

It appears this was all brewing in the days before Libby's indictment. Why did Woodward wait until then to reveal his role in the CIA leak? My question is, is this just CYA, or is there more to it?

1. Tweety asking this now -- peeling off revelations for political gain
Matthews asked Downie how he felt about the media being used for political purposes. (Gee, why haven't you been asking this question all along?)

4. Yep, sounds like CYA to me
The last thing Woodward wants at this point in his career is a big, black mark on him over the Plame affair. He probably figured it would come out at some point. So he must have thought "We can do this easy or do it hard" and decided to get it out there sooner rather than later. He could probably see some handwriting on the wall. I'll bet that people like Woodward, who have fame and adulation (from some, not me), fear losing that greatly. Give up the secret now and get it over with (but not without a lot of preparation, including discussions with his lawyer). My take on it.

5. Because his ass is in a sling
If Fitz doesn't get him, Libby's lawyers will. He's been walking a fine line for too long - hope it catches up with him and too bad he can't share a cell with Judy. He is hoping that his public persona as a "respected writer" will protect him - he will take WP down with him as Judy did the NYT.

10. I was going to correct you and ask if you meant Judy Woodruff,
but I got what you were talking about. :) What an ugly woman.

9. The whole thing is about protecting National Security....
Don't these so called reporters, American citizens, give a shit about this country? It's all about their egos and money. We the little people, are expected to blow the whistle on anyone who wants to do harm to America. I for one, would blow the cover on anyone wanting to harm my country. Why are these reporters less American?

11. If I were Downie I wouldn't accept the apology.
Woodward is playing the Post like a fiddle, just as Judy Miller played the NYT.

Fire his ass.

12. My speculation was that Woodward was uncertain as to whether
his name might come up in some context in any announcement from Fitzgerald even in a peripheral way so he covered his ass with Downie under the pretense of a possible story. With his 'in' with the top echelon of the bushites, he would certainly have heard that Libby was indeed about to be charged and he had had a conversation with Libby as well as his other sources.

If one looks back at his CNN appearance when he referred to Fitzgerald as a 'junkyard dog prosecutor' in light of what we now know as his direct connection to the leak, one could read this quote:

"Well this is a junkyard dog prosecutor and he goes everywhere and asks every question and turns over rocks and rocks under rocks and so forth."

as preparing the ground ahead of the possibility of his name cropping up.
