I was watching the Johnny Cash special, and be still my heart...
Kris Kristofferson has given to Dems exclusively. http://www.newsmeat.com/fec/bystate_detail.php?st=CA&last=kristofferson

Can't tell you how pleased I am. I love Kris & his music. I think the whole show was great. U2 was great. Kristofferson with the Foo Fighters was AWESOME, Nora Jones was great, Brad Paisley is an incredible guitar player, but I think Alison Krauss and Dwight Yoakam stole the show.

3. I salute the Man In Black...and always will...
"Well, you wonder why I always dress in black,
Why you never see bright colors on my back,
And why does my appearance seem to have a somber tone.
Well, there's a reason for the things that I have on.

I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down,
Livin' in the hopeless, hungry side of town,
I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime,
But is there because he's a victim of the times."

May someone else take up his banner.

4. Cash had no use for the neocons, that's for sure...
He was very spiritual toward the end..."Bridge Over Troubled Water" etc...When June Carter died, Cash knew the end for him was near as well. He wanted to go out wirh dignity, and he did...O8)

5. Kris has ALWAYS been a Dem!
I once saw a special on the Highwaymen, that supergroup he was in with Cash, Willie, and Waylon. They had their little work areas set up at the studio, and Kris had Noam Chomsky posters at his desk, lol. He gave them all a "role" as the outlaw personas of their name suggested. He branded himself as the "Marxist Revolutionary". :D

He was a Rhodes Scholar, by the way. Good actor too. Although I like his songwriting, his voice is his Achilles Heel. :-)

6. He wrote his master's thesis
on William Blake.

What's not to love about the guy?

"The Highwaymen" was just re-released. New mix, better sound. God, those guys were amazing.

8. Kris also had nice things to say about another Rhodes Scholar....
that he endorsed during the '04 primaries....

"Just when the world is being dragged into the death spiral of an unending cycle of violence by a vision-less, coldblooded collection of think-tank warriors goose-stepping their way into the new millennium with a stunning lack of respect for human rights, the environment, or international law, along comes a man with the proven credentials of intelligence, integrity, and courage singularly equipped by his spirit and experience to lead us out of this mess. Don't listen to what the lying liars say about him; listen to what he says. Wesley Clark is a prayer answered." Kris Kristofferson

Kris also supported Jesse Jackson and Jerry Brown in the days.....

9. Kris--a Rhodes Scholar and the son of an Air Force general--
supported another Rhodes Scholar who was himself a general, in one of the most moving and eloquent statements it has ever been my pleasure to read:

"Just when the world is being dragged into the death spiral of an unending cycle of violence by a vision-less, coldblooded collection of think-tank warriors goose-stepping their way into the new millennium with a stunning lack of respect for human rights, the environment, or international law, along comes a man with the proven credentials of intelligence, integrity, and courage singularly equipped by his spirit and experience to lead us out of this mess. Don't listen to what the lying liars say about him; listen to what he says. Wesley Clark is a prayer answered."

13. so what'd you think of the show? . . .
I was kinda disappointed . . . a few of the performers were okay, no one delivered a really memorable performance, and there were mostly clunkers, imo . . . even those that performed okay sometimes totally lost the sense of the song . . .

"Ring of Fire" is a dark, brooding song written by June Carter about getting involved with Johnny Cash, but Sheryl Crow did it as a sunny, lilting number, complete with autoharp, totally missing the essence of the song . . . similarly, Jerry Lee Lewis and Kid Rock did "I Walk the Line" as a rock 'n' roll number, which it was never intended to be . . . and Jerry Lee has really lost most of his vocal presence . . .

I thought Martina McBride's rendition of "I Still Miss Someone" might have been the highlight, followed closely by Allison Kraus and Dwight Yoakum doing "If I Were a Carpenter" . . . Nora Jones was okay, but Kris Kristoferson just can't do those low registers anymore . . . he needed to be up a key on "Sunday Moring Coming Down" . . .

all in all a forgettable show, imo . . . I wouldn't buy the CD . . .

18. Agree with you on Sheryl Crow, but I dug Jerry Lee Lewis
Edited on Thu Nov-17-05 01:47 AM by fishwax
I thought his part of I Walk the Line was fantastic. I actually thought Kid Rock handled his part well too (though I don't generally like him at all)--i didn't think the two meshed very well as a duet, but I liked their individual takes on the song ... but sheryl crow's version of ring of fire was nuthin :/

19. Way'at blitzen
Has Baton Rouge calmed down lately? Last month when I went to New Orleans to begin cleaning, I stayed overnight in BR. It was insane! The traffic was NEVER so bad when I was going to LSU a few years ago. It seemed like every hour was rush hour.

20. It's pretty much back to "normal"...
meaning the traffic is kinda bad. But you're right, it was insane for a couple months after Katrina.

16. My dad was watching a little bit of that earlier
We didn't get to see the whole thing but I did see Martina McBride and she has such a beautiful voice. My Mom told me Sheryl Crow was there too. I'll have to watch the whole thing later this week. :)
