Email making the rounds vilifying liberals, surprise, surprise!
My youngest daughter, married to a real neocon, ho-o-o-o-o-rah former Marine keeps sending me stuff to "prove" that liberals are bad, bad, bad while the "rest of the country" if filled with wonderful, caring people who support our military." The latest contribution is the one making the rounds that Denzel Washington whipped out his checkbook and donated enough money to build a visitors' house at Brooks Army Medical Center after visiting some injured soldiers. The email had several basic assumptions wrong but the overall gist of the story was correct. I "snopes" it and found that Washington did visit, did meet with some injured soldiers and later sent a "significant" donation toward building another visitors' house.

But in the same email she talked about how unpatriotic Alec Baldwin, Sean Penn, Susan Saradon, et all - all the liberals in Hollywood do nothing to make life better for anyone but themselves. I snoped these names to see if I could get any scuttlebutt on things liberals have done but couldn't find any. I'm preparing an email to fire back at her (and the the 50 other people she forwarded the damn thing to) to set them all straight. Does anyone have any examples of "liberal" celebrities that I can add to the mix? Anyplace good for a little research? All help appreciated.

PS - She told me the other day that Bush & Co. would never - NEVER - cut student loans, food stamps, Head Start or Medicare and they certainly wasn't going to give tax cuts to the extremely wealthy. Love her to death but she has her head up her ass. She has become "militant" about this stuff since marrying her guy last December. His family (great people, horrible citizens - actually told her that they are sorry that her mother is a liberal - whispered in tones reserved for curse words uttered in polite society) are a whole bunch of dildoheads who listen to nothing but Faux, Lush Limpballs, Bill Falafel and Sean Insanity. She certainly wasn't raised like this and I am hoping that eventually she will outgrown this nonsense. In the meantime - I will either correct her thinking or get off her email list for this junk.

Anybody got some good examples?

1. It's far easier to blame liberals than to think
and when they say that "Dems have no ideas" - tell them that phrase contradicts their mantra that Dems always are coming up with ideas to waste taxpayer dollars . . .

2. If the crimes and tax cuts and deficit don't do it
I've got nothing else to offer.

How on earth is Denzel's largesse supposed to be a win for the right? Am I missing something?

3. Sean Penn rescued people in New Orleans.
but if she thinks Bush doesn't give tax cuts to the wealthy, she's the type that if Bush has sex with a sheep on the White house lawn would say "oh now, you know he didn't want to do that"

4. How about someone who supported the 911 victims?
Sam Waterston, the actor on Law and Order and who campaigned for Gore in 2000 and donated the max to Kerry in 2004, was at Ground Zero on 9/12, going around talking with the rescuers, bucking up their spirits, asking them for their autographs, etc. He went to a Christmas party in 2001 for the widows and orphans of the firefighters/police who died that year.

As for 'supporting the troops'-he's on the board of Refugees International, an organization that has been monitoring the situation in Afghanistan and Iraq and reporting back on refugee situations. They are an independent voice, beholden to no government, and tell it like it is. Maybe won't help with your rw relatives, but their site does have a lot of facts--www.refugeesinternational.org

6. so because Denzel Washington supported
"the troops" he's automatically NOT a liberal????

I don't know anything about him really but I do know about the story a little bit through snopes.com.

What about Al Franken who is a big USO supporter AND preformer? He supports the troops and who could be more liberal than him?

7. Maybe she shouldn't be holding up Denzel as an example
Couric: "And how do you feel about the current political situation?"
Washington: "You know, I haven't seen 'Fahrenheit 9/11,' because I live in America. I grew up here. I'm an ex-slave. I'm a result of what this country can do. So it's nothing new to me. I'm not surprised at all. It's just business as usual. What I want to talk about is, what are we doing right now, today, for these young kids that are coming home? Are we embracing them? I don't hear about them being lifted up. I mean, I'm not just talking about a parade but —"

Couric: "Are they getting the support they need."

Washington: "Are they getting the support and love they need from us? And maybe that story's being told, but I sure haven't seen it that much in the news. Yeah, they're pointing fingers about who was right and whose wrong and who started what and where the weapons of mass destruction. But these kids are coming home."

Streep: "Uh-huh."

Washington: "You know, I have a son, 19, 19-year-olds are coming home completely different."

This was a fake story circulating on the internet: http://www.truthorfiction.com/rumors/d/denzel-brooke.htm

The real story here is why isn't there sufficient housing for these wounded vets' families to stay in the first place? Geez, I would think with over $300 BILLION PLUS AND COUNTING allocated or spent on this war for oil and revenge now, all the tens of MILLIONS "lost" to and by war profiteers like Halliburton already, and the huge annual deficit we're running up anyway, the gov't would have enough $ to free up to supply these families with housing?

No, why do that when (1) we're not allowed to see pictures of these wounded soldiers... (2) the dead bodies are flown in on night flights only so that we won't see the caskets... (3) veterans benefits have been reduced... (4) veterans' fees have been increased... (5) veterans at walter reed hospital here in maryland are now being charged for their meals, which they have no choice but to buy, since they're DISABLED, and STUCK there... (6) recruiters cheat and lie to get these poor saps to sign up in the first place... (7) when they carry out their orders to torture and humiliate "prisoners of war"/"insurgents"/"civilians"/"enemy combatants" (or whatever term we're using this week to avoid the clear prohibitions of the geneva conventions), they become the scapegoat (the "few bad apples") who take the fall for our leaders' war crimes... (8) we're still having them use ILLEGAL (that darn geneva convention again!) depleted uranium ordinance, which is radioactive, and which causes gulf war syndrome (and which affected 1000s of the gulf war vets) and which is already causing sickness among troops and iraqis (and we've already used more in iraq and Afghanistan that in the gulf war)... (9) proposed amendments to the bankruptcy reform bill (aka: "blatant handout to credit card companies whose profits have already nearly doubled in the last decade without any help anyway act") that included exemptions for VETERANS WHO DECLARE BANKRUPTCY DUE TO DIRE ECONOMIC CIRCUMSTANCES were shot down (by Republicans), (10) the gov. of texas just told gay texas VETS to leave the state (http://www.washblade.com/thelatest/thelatest.cfm?blog_id=1006), (11) Veterans Affairs officials estimate that about 250,000 veterans are homeless on any given night, and another 250,000 experience homelessness at some point!!(http://www.estripes.com/article.asp?section=104&article=28676&archive=true), and (12) we won't even provide these KIDS with proper vehicle and body armor to protect them in the first place, despite Congress allocating the money and the Pentagon having almost 3 years to do it!

They're also responsible for cuts in veterans benefits - http://www.thenewstribune.com/front/topstories/story/4629906p-4297561c.html ...

Cuts in COMBAT PAY! - http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2003/08/14/MN94780.DTL ...

Cuts in family-separation allowances - http://www.armytimes.com/story.php?f=1-292259-1989240.php ...

I haven't even mentioned the back-door draft!

Or the use of "white phospherous" on Iraqi civilians in Fallujah... you know, the stuff that burns skin and leaves clothing intact, that our military just admitted using (after they were caught lying about it, of course)...

These aren't Madonna's fault. They're not Susan Sarandon's fault. They're not Baldwin's fault. They're the fault of the maniacal idiots who said (and believed?) such things as "We'll be greated in the streets with flowers." or "The war will pay for itself." The people that lied to us and told us that saddam had ties to al qaeda, osama, and 9/11, was training and harboring terrorists, and had huge stockpiles of WMD... all proven to be lies. These people that diverted all of our anti-terror efforts in Afghanistan and around the world, and AT HOME, and destroyed the backing of the world community, to invade a defenseless sovereign nation and bomb it back into the middle ages so they could profit from it. Some of the same people Bush Sr. called "the crazies in the basement" during Reagan's presidency. They go by the names of rumsfeld, cheney, wolfowitz, etc. You know, those guys that "err on the side of life." They don't give a ^%*& about the troops, or us, unless it suits their needs. And they're laughing all the way to the bank.

So keep blaming Hollywood, whch we all know makes out foreign policy for us, right? What a joke. While you're railing at straw men, this very same administration and its supporters are the ones doing everything humanly possible it seems, to NOT support the troops, meanwhile they're robbing you blind and gettign our kids killed to rob another country blind. So go rant some more about liberals in Hollywood, you're doing America a great service. They're playing you like a fiddle. Wake up!
