Rush, Roger Hedgecock, and Father Coughlin
There's been quite a bit of discussion lately (from all sides of the political spectrum, actually) about the apalling lapses in manners, lack of respect, and general uncivility, as regards contemporary political discourse.

All you have to do is turn on AM radio and listen to what those people are saying. I did, earlier this afternoon and was thoroughly disgusted by Rush, Jr. (the most popular wannabe, a guy from California named Roger Hedgecock) taking quotes out of context, and using argumentative, insulting and inaccurate language to mis-characterize his perceived ideological 'enemies'.

Yuck... I was taken back to high school History Class, and a vague memory of that 1930's scourge of the radio airwaves, Father Coughlin... So I looked him up... I only read the first essay from this web page, but if this man was the measure of Proscribed Speech before WWII (His Superiors at the Catholic Church took him off the air, for being anti-Semetic, among other things), then we have really, really sunk a long way down into the pit.

This is in no way an attempt to rehabilitate anyone's reputation, but it does provide a stark example (showing, not telling) how far the culture has descended... That is if anyone's listened to AM radio, lately.

I'd be interested to know what kinds of things people have heard or read about, as far as coming up with a response to the daily dosage of AM poison...

2. No surprise there, you're listening to a convicted felon

It's all too interesting how time heals all wounds, and seemingly gives self-righteous twits like Roger Hedgecock a second chance that in their warped vision of the world anybody else would not deserve. Talk about rehabilitating reputations, Roger Hedgecock is the former mayor of San Diego, and he was forced to resign from office amidst perjury and conspiracy charges in the mid-80s. (He originally succeeded Pete Wilson as S.D. mayor) Rather than get a substitute gig with Limbaugh, this guy should've done hard time.

http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/metro/probe/20030829-9999_z1m29scandal.html

"1985: San Diego Mayor Roger Hedgecock resigned after he was convicted of one count of conspiracy and 12 counts of perjury. The charges stemmed from allegations that he financed his 1983 mayoral campaign with more than $300,000 funneled through a political consulting firm. Hedgecock was sentenced to a year in county custody, a fine and three years' probation. After the state Supreme Court reversed the perjury convictions, Hedgecock made a deal with prosecutors. He pleaded guilty to the felony conspiracy count that was reduced to a misdemeanor and then dismissed in 1991. He served no time in jail."

That the so called party of morals, has as its voices three convicted felons:

G. Gordon Liddy (burglary)
Oliver North (perjury and obstruction)
Roger Hedgecock (perjury and conspiracy)

They have apoplectic fits over Bill Clinton getting a blow job though.
