Can all the Dems just not vote tonite? Then state that they aren't going
to play these Republican stunts while our troops are in harms way?

6. Sounds kinda cowardly.
If the Republicans really want a straight up or down vote, it will be immediate withdrawal, period. If that's the deal, I think Dems should take it.

Something tells me they will put in language to make it impossible for Dems to support, so they can call it withdrawal, but really it will be something that either way the Dems vote, they will lose in the long run.

11. If the vote is not binding, it is not cowardly to refuse to play
politics with our children's lives.

Think about what the Republicans are doing. They are making our children's sacrifice a JOKE. HA! HA! Ain't that funny.

17. Congress decides funding for war, and whether or not to declare.
So it is completely within their power to make a binding vote. If they don't, Dems can say, "This is a toothless stunt vote that President Bush can veto."

A war appropriation bill, though, would be for real.

12. This certainly is not
the armchair bravado advice we usually give out on DU. So, good procedural tactics or clearing the air on a clear position or cut out of town? Apparently there are not very good ideas here and hopefully this is where legislative acumen can show its mettle when the spin on the "clever" GOP and its raw power gives them the edge.

The sheep I am seeing scattering at present are us rather than our reps, so that is an interesting change for now. Maybe we could use this incident to in the future to exercise better judgment when easily calling out the elected party officials.

16. I'm not sure I get where you're coming from.
I'm saying that not voting is running away from a fight.

However, I doubt the Republicans are dumb enough to give us a true up or down vote...most likely they will give us a gesture that we would never vote for and call it an up or down vote.

They are distorting our position though. The Dem reps are about setting responsible benchmarks for withdrawal, not cut and run.

19. I AM running a bit of a genuine fever
so tonight has got me in a whirl. The Dems are doing very well. I hope they keep building on the fight forced upon them by the total "put up or shut up" of the GOP that is condemning America and Iraq to ruin.

It is their war. It is doomed and their fate is connected to it by blood.

Every Democrat should vote for it regardless of where they stand. Call their bluff.

8. Agreed. Walk out, step directly up to the closest TV camera and say....
"The republican leadership wants to play games with our soldiers' lives, and we refuse to take part in it."

9. Frame it this way: Shall we continue bu$h's sacred cow?
It takes brave people to admit when you're wrong. This war was wrong from day one, and it's worse now. Today we turn the table on the Republicans and shoot down this sacred cow.

In any event, a good number of dems with spines will gladly vote for Murtha's resolution.
