When they hauled you up and let you strangle slowly instead of dropping you and snapping your neck...

I read an account of a hanging over in the northeast part of the state about 100 years ago. The account by the Sherrif claimed it took the condemmed 15 minutes to stop kicking and thrashing around.
He "retired" and never took part in another hanging after that.
