Anyone see that new Ford commercial? The one that says
"...millions of people who have joined our family"?

It's a very sarrcharine sweet lovey-dovey tone.

1. I wonder what kind of commercials GM will be running . . .
In light of the 30,000 layoffs they're announcing. Will they mount a soft-focus spin campaign, or will they just pretend that layoffs don't exist?

The world wonders.

5. Of course they will!
Need to jettison those expensive pensions and retiree health benefits, hell, the tax payers will be happy to pick up those costs. Oh and better demand all workers take a pay cut to $10/hour while they're at it.

The GOP wonderland draws ever nearer.

8. Toyota was willing to bail out GM
so it stands to reason that another car maker would offer the same to Ford. Regardless, the business practices of these big American car makers brought on their own demise. They're technologically deficient and it will take years to catch up. Years that it doesn't look like they have. They simply don't produce what people want.

FWIW, I have a Ford, a new Chevrolet, and a Honda. I drive the 12 year old Honda every day because it still gets 12 mpg more than the brand spanking new Chevrolet. I've been trying to sell the Ford for a year and NOBODY wants it.

14. According to bank corporate lending officer, Ford should be OK; GM tanks
Close friend works with major Japanese bank corporate lending;
says Ford is taking the right steps in changing their models and appears to have done so in time. Arrogant GM refused to make the necessary changes, and it takes 4 to 6 years to get a new model to the showrooms. At the rate GM is going through their admittedly large cash reserves, they'll be out of cash in maybe 18 months. Friend says GM upper management is very incestuous, inbred, unimaginative - nearly always promote from within, so they never allow for fresh ideas, criticism, etc. - sounds like the Bush administration doesn't it? Also points out that GM CEO may try to blame foreign competition or pension fund demands. But Chrysler is doing fine, and Ford is turning the corner. As to pension funds, GM should have dedicated enough cash to that; if there's a shortfall, it's because GM cooked the books.

7. Those commercials kill me
Recently Wachovia Bank bought out Southtrust and LOTS of people in my city lost their jobs. Now every time I turn on the tv, there's a commercial saying "Welcome to Wachovia!" It must be a kick in the gut every time to the folks Wachovia laid off.

9. My particular favorite was the Chevy commercial where they say
"There's no word in the Japanese Language for Pick-up Truck."

That there isn't one in the English language either is apparently too deep for Chevy's ad agency.

11. Employees aren't family. Customers are
Employees cost money. Customers give money.

If only there was a business where you could make money and get money from customers without having employees (or, at least, ones you need to pay)...

:sarcasm:

But seriously. That's how many "free-market" conservatives think.

12. I like the Ford I bought this year (2005 Focus)
It's a good little car. It gets excellent mileage and has a lot of extras in it, like heated seats, which I've been totally appreciating over the past week of cold weather.

13. Could GM's financial problems spell the end of the HUMMER?
Let's hope GM is forced to thin thier product line. If that happens, it could mean the end of the HUMMER.
