BBV Activists: Thoughts on strategy, slogans, images
Edited on Thu Oct-16-03 11:37 AM by nostamj

Been working on Bev's challenge to develop some good sound bites, slogans, memes, whatever.

Some thoughts:

My approach has been to think of the broadest, non-partisan, message. While we here at DU have (and should have) partisan interests in the broader BBV story, as a grass-roots, multi-faceted, activist movement should enbrace all Americans concerned about the validity of their votes.

I'm posting three concepts in the thread. They should NOT be considered as final in terms of design. They are sketches only.

In a way, I'm taking a page from the ?W concept by trying to come up with a strategy that will intitate individual dialog. As with ?W, if a contact reveals a fellow Dem, then dialog regarding more partisan aspects of BBV can follow. But with a simple, non-political baseline, I think we'd have the best chance of reaching voters as opposed to republicans or democrats, liberals or conservatives.

If I'm off-point, I'm sure someone will let me know.

I'm still struggling with condensing the "paper ballot" and "verified" concepts simply. "No Paper? No Proof." Is the best I've got so far. (Also, I would assume that if these are used in bumperstickers, pins, whatever, that they would include the URL info... which I didn't have handy when I whipped up these samples.

3. Nice Work!!!!
I like them all. If it gets people to ask questions it is a good start.

I totally agree about the need to stay away from the 'conspiracy theory' stuff until you know which way the wind blows. I am a constant poster on MoveOn and I try to keep the HR2239 and Voting comments pointed toward bi-partisanship. There are way too many repugs who post on there. We have to get through to everyone.

You're a Democrat.
Will you be re-elected with (Diebold) in control and no paper trail?.

7. "trail"

I'm pretty sure that we don't want the word "trail" associated with this.

"paper ballot" not "paper trail" (because BBV *can* produce a printout... but can that be trusted? no.

like the life cycle of a flea/liver fluke where if some part of the life-cycle isn't interrupted then the infestation just becomes overwhelming) - showing the various stages/ties of electronic voting (don't make it complicated obviously) and then compare that to a pen and paper??

another idea - costs of a voting machine + contracts + fundraising etc. vs. pen and paper (in pictorial form)

my 2 cents ..

would work for an advertisement or hand-out.

I'm working on the SIMPLEST concept and SIMPLEST execution.

for me, that means PLAIN TEXT.

the BBV story does not lend itself (IMHO) to a single graphic image

"Will Microsoft Windows do to your vote what it did to your computer?"

or you can use one of my quotes from the book:

Vote.exe has caused a general protection fault in America.com. All work since 1776 may have been lost. Please close your republic and try to reboot.

12. this is too narrowly focused for what I'm trying for...
i.e. not everyone has issues with Microsoft so the message wouldn't 'hit' with them.

the "Vote.exe" quote is GREAT!

I think it would be a very effective approach with online activism (email, sig lines, banners)

14. Computerized Voting
The weakness of computerized voting is that there's no audit trail. You just have to trust the programmers! There's got to be a way to high profile that weakness without sounding like machines are unreliable.

This is just so exciting.

I like them all -- as you can see, nostamj is one of the masters of packing a lot into a few words.

I also love this: No Paper, No Proof -- but it only works when there is a lead-in that tells people we're talking about voting.

This is certainly getting there. Keep contributing your ideas!

19. when approaching the big names who won't come forward
and support this. The only alternative they leave is the VERY one they most wnat to criticizez: namely rocking the boat and discouraging voters.
So BBV reformers deserve time and an informed dialogue not a blow off and shoddy trust us and the experts generalization- or lies.

has anyone had a sitdown with someone who is sane and has an open mind and is not a bewildered optimist with rose colored glasses? We need more powerful spokespersons. Otherwise it will be Iraq all over again.

Unwitting dupes to get some vote reform(lied to and grossly misdirected as per GOP procedure) will barely able to tunr around AFTER the disaster. Only this time WE are Iraq and WE will be occupied even more than we are now.

Have there been adequate presentations to which members of Congress, the DNC, legal organizations, advocacy groups, etc. Holding a mirror to them and saying that is an impressive cheerleading loyalty for the Diebold sale but you may have been had? Depends on the individual and whether it is worth the effort.

I thought underneath the general big lie the Dems knew the score, but apparently they may be more fooled than anyone. Such a common con or PR maneouver. You'd think pro pols could smell that, but no, even our own people have bought the good old Diebold counterattack hook line and sinker at its most shallow depth.

Petitions and applications for absentee ballots spreading a grass roots revolt to make the expense of unverifiable machines a total waste.

22. How about: "Do you trust...
...an electron with your vote?"
...a computer with your vote?"
...a programmer with your vote?"
...corporation with your vote?", alternatively,

"Did you vote for...(an electron, computer, programmer, corporation)?"

Or, "If you didn't see a ballot, you might not have voted."

Or (my favorite), "Paper proof...for your money AND your vote!"

25. think of a soda machine....

you slip in your $1

you press the button for ROOT BEER

a can of Vanilla Pepsi is delivered

you know your requested was not properly processed by the machine

so..........

you slip in your voting card

you press the button for Candidate Mr. Root Beer

a vote for Ms. Vanilla Pepsi is recorded

you go home and wait for the 'official' results

since you don't like or want Ms. Vanilla Pepsi you should demand to know what the machine is processing, right?

another illustrative scenerio. online shopping.

you go to your favorite online bookstore and purchase a copy of Al Franken's latest book and a volume of Elizabethan love sonnets.

your payment is confirmed, but you do not receive an order confirmation or receipt.

next week, a shipment (with packing list) arrives containing 10 copies of Ann Coulter's TREASON and a volume of Elizabethan love sonnets.

you complain that you never ordered 10 copies of Ann Coulter's TREASON... but you have no receipt to prove it.

that's what I'm trying for... something direct and simple... and utterly non-partisan...

something that will LEAD people to the facts behind the slogans.

and something that activists can USE as a tool for sparking dialog and education.

if you won't be offended by *possible* editing/condensing... please send more slogan ideas and I'll see what I can come up with.

and remember........ images posted today are "sketches" not final, polished designs. (maybe we can even entice someone like ianbruce to add that professional graphic polish!)

50. You should also borrow the language of computer crashes
You know?

The problem with computer voting is that we all know that software has glitches, and can crash, and computers blue screen, and there are hackers, and your system file can get corrupted etc.

You need to work these themes.

Actually, "corrupted' would be a good work to work into the tag line because it has the double meaning -- system files and politicians can get corrupted.

"DON"T LET YOUR VOTE GET CORRUPTED. NO UNVERIFIED COMPUTER VOTING."

105. Blue Screen of Death!
A Microsoft feature. If you use Windows like Diebold does, you have no doubt seen warnings on a blue screen that say things like,

WARNING!

Vote.dll has caused a 'General Protection Fault' in America.exe. All work since 1776 may be lost! Please close your Republic and try rebooting your country.

This is the Blue Screen of Death (show the BSOD)

This is your vote on the Blue Screen of Death (show nothing at all)

OK, that's not so good.

How 'bout this:

I've already got them on the site.

As a courtesy, here are links to the pages where I used them.

Main page: http://www.timbuk3.com/

And on the page with Bev's books: http://www.timbuk3.com/evote.htm

I have always had the same policy toward using someone else's original work. It is THEIR work and I'm using it with THEIR permission. If you ever change your mind, or don't like the way I made use of it, please let me know and I'll remove it ASAP.

BTW, I have also compiled an Excel worksheet with the complete California voting machine results, sorted by county, candidate, and voting machine type. I've been trying to get a co-worker, who is also a statistician, to help me analyze the data but he's been on vactation. If anyone wants to take a look at it, and better yet if any statisticians out there want the data in a form that will make analysis easier, it's at this link: http://www.timbuk3.com/vote.xls.

I'm just trying to do my part.

Tim

I always like to credit Atman, who just started posting here, too. He did the banner, and the "curtains for justice" logo. (Click on that one. Interesting story, there.) He really helped make the thing easier on the eyes. (His site should be easy to find online with a search for rmcgcreative and/or not banned yet. Or just go to my "merchandise" or "links" pages. His page is much nicer than mine. ;-> )

BTW, I really didn't mean to plug these sites (I'm lying, or should I say "bushing", about that.) But, I really do want people to know that they're safe contributing content to the site. I won't misuse it, and I will remove it asap on their request. That's why I posted the links.

BTW, there's an email link on the menu if anyone wants a "permanent" home for their thoughts, opinions, or just has a point they'd like to make.

I'll try to avoid any more of this "selfish" promotion from now on.

189. You're welcome
As I said earlier, I work for a company that has a statistician on site. He was on vacation M-W of this week, and has been very busy since he got back. I've already spoken to him, and we're going to look at the numbers when we both have time.

I trust this guy, but we've never discussed politics. I have no intention of "giving away" where I stand on the issue. I'm just going to say, "There are those who think that..."

I expect to get an unbiased opinion from a real statistician about whether or not there is anything unusual about the vote count in the California recall election.

Don't misunderstand what I'm looking at, btw. I've never doubted that Davis was unpopular, or that name-recognition meant more than qualifications in the short time the replacements had to campaign. (I'll never forget that several stations had "arnie marathons" the weekend he announced, either, but that's another issue.)

Davis was recalled, and Arnie won, fair and square. Imagine that: A Democrat with an (R) after his name won an election in California. (Pro choice, anti-gun, pro-environment, pro-gay rights, and he claims to be a REPUBLICAN???)

I'm wondering if this wasn't a "test run" for siphoning votes from popular candidates to less popular candidates (a la Pat Buchannon in West Palm Beach.) It was an IDEAL situation to try out the system (of cheating) and looking for bugs with so many candidates, and no real reason to question the results. If I wanted to cheat on the 2004 elections it's EXACTLY the way I'd "practice" for it.

But, as it stands right now, I have no proof that anything unusual happened in the CA recall election, and I'm making no claim. I'll wait until an expert examines the data, and let ya'all know.

But, in the meantime, if there's a bona fide statistician out there who can run the numbers and make a rational case for, OR against, vote tampering with mystery machines, I'd like to hear it. The link to the data is in a prior post (and I promised to stop, or at least slow the shameless self-promotion of my non-profit web site.) If you dl the data, please take a look at the graph near cell G85, which is a plot of the percent of local vote, by candidate. The huge spikes for the touch screen data *could* be explained by the low number of counties (with large populations) in that data set. Or, it could be something more sinister. I'm not qualified to say, but I know someone who is...

I'm hoping you'll be in on the planning next week?

their Brazil machines are from a company they acquired called Procomp.

Their USA machines are from a company they acquired called Global Election Systems.

Eric Roorda got stock in Diebold when they acquired Procomp, I believe. I assume he was one of the Procomp principals. He began selling Diebold stock like there was no tomorrow; he dumped over $30 million since August 15.

hey guys, LOL, I cannot stop laughing! Great job...

On a more strategic side, do you think it is wise
to focus all fire on Diebold ? I've seen many of
the pictures refer to Diebold. I'm wondering if that
might not be counterproductive. Since they are
litigious, this might attract some defamation
lawsuits (don't know). But also, it takes pressure
off other companies... Do we really believe that Sequoia
and ES&S are less slimy and incompetent than Diebold ?
Just a thought.

PS. I bet Groenig will do a Simpsons episode on the BBV thing.
And Bev will be one of the characters in the story! Actually,
it might be a good idea to write him :)

108. Creative loss of defect log at Diebold!
Edited on Thu Oct-16-03 09:34 PM by DanSpillane
Ch. 8 and 9, your book. Very funny!!!

I love the creative way in which Diebold made software defects disappear--they made the list disappear! OOOPPPPS! Darn! LOST THE FILE!

Another company I know of made people and individual defects disappear!

Tell me, WHO is smarter?

Maybe Diebold isn't THAT DUMB??? Isn't it much easier to lose a whole PILE of defects rather than go at a pile one by one, murdering employees along the way?!?

(p.s. I can point out the section in the FEC guidelines which make this a severe violation.)

It must gall the hide-the-vote industry to have a critic who has memorized 600 pages of regulations and can quote violations chapter and verse.

I guess a catastrophic accident to bugzilla is considered more plausible than "my ferret ate it?"

that I'm sure you know about, that is a bit too big for the current book. Consider the current book the pave-the-way book for this very bizarre stuff RedEagle and you have been stumbling into. People are getting dizzy just on BBV, let's give them a chance to catch their breath and start looking for root causes.

Diebold has to maintain their bug database since they are "responsible or a quality assurance program and record keeping of tests and defects" (more or less)

In Washington State, FEC certification is codified.

FEC 2003
I 7.2
The voting system vendor is responsible for designing and implementing a quality assurance program to ensure that the design, workmanship, and performance requirements of this standard are achieved in all delivered systems and components

II 7.4.5c

A graphic with ones and zeros in a line top to bottom with different names and arrows pointing at each number. And in the middle are question marks representing YOUR vote. Try to visually get accross the idea that who knows which voter (if any) corresponds to which bit?

Sorry I'm not graphically inclined, or I'd try it myself.

Have a picture of Wally Odell with the "I'm comitted to delivering Ohio to Bush" quote, then have it read "Would you trust this man to cast your vote for you? How about a computer he programmed?"

For those who like in-your-face messages: Touch Screen? Tough shit.

Not at a computer where I have Photoshop, but, graphically, how about split page, one side with a paper ballot, headed by "This is a paper ballot." Other side is empty white space, headed by, "This is an electron." At the bottom, footer reads, "Which is easier for you to count?

If it's important, it should be in writing!
Your grandparents said it, your parents said it.
You KNOW they were right.
Is YOUR ballot important?
Make sure your ballot is a PAPER ballot.

or

Is YOUR ballot worth the paper it's printed on?

or

You can't count what you can't see.
Shouldn't YOUR ballot count?

About time someone threw it back at them for all their

"can't have paper people will try to sell their vote"
"these BBV people are against electronic voting"
"the BBV crowd doesn't want the disabled to vote"
"why even have a machine if you are going to have paper?"
"they are all conspiracy nuts"
"there are no machines that produce a paper ballot"
"it would be really expensive to have a paper ballot"
"people need to get into the modern era"
"these machines are tested and tested and tested again"
"we've never had a problem"

Guess what: Our sound byte writers are more talented than theirs.

Edited on Fri Oct-17-03 08:03 PM by phoebe
rhyme? (as follows)

For want of a nail , the shoe was lost:
For want of the shoe , the horse was lost;
For want of the horse , the rider was lost;
For want of the rider , the battle was lost;
For want of the battle , the kingdom was lost,
And all for the want of a nail.

can we use this theme to incorporate the voting mess?? I'll plug away at this one to see what I can come up with - what do you think??

Maybe simplify it to "for want of verified voting, a democracy was lost" -

here's my effort..I KNOW one of you can do better than this..

for want of a vote, the machines were made:
for want of the machines, the contracts were written;
for want of the contracts, the dollars were spent;
for want of the dollars, the people were fooled;
for want of the people, a democracy was stolen
And all for the want of a vote..
