1. Ted Stevens: wanted to restrict discussion on Byrd's amendment,
'cause "We gotta get this bill($87 billion) through this week."Hey, I've got a bon mot for you Ted Stevens.THIS BILL AINT' NO EMERGENCY.
There's enough money to finance everything for MONTHS longer, maybe through April or May.

Just because the President says it's an emergency doesn't mean it is...because HE LIES.

2. Did you see the blustering idiot?
Did you see him railing about how we can't tie the hands of the commander in chief while troops are in the field (my synopsis, not his exact words)? It's as if this moron doesn't even recognize the role of the Congress as providing a check to the Executive Branch.

Hey, this being laid-off has its upsides, like getting to watch the Senate in session. :)

3. This statement is so sad
In a way, it encapsulates everything that is wrong with this occupation.

5. More information
This was read in the Senate at 12:15 eastern on October 16? I've been combing through the congressional record and can't find it.

7. That's why I need to be sure the date is correct.
This was something said by Senator Leahy on October 16? That was Thursday. If you're sure that's right, I'll go back and slog through the CR page by page again. The Senator doesn't have it on his own web page, either.

And what kind of nerds are we, spending Saturday night with the congressional record? At least I'm an old lady, so I have an excuse. ;-)

16. I wrote a poem, too.
After midnight, they bring the wounded in.
In with the silence; in where the common dark
Makes all words one. No luminescent spark
Reaches this place, but for a light within.

After midnight, there are no cheering crowds.
The wounded are no longer fit for use
By those in power, who make no excuse
For limbs, for eyes, for bandages, for shrouds.

Husbands and daughters, sons and mothers, friends,
Fodder to schemes of grandiosity —
Missing their eyes because men do not see.
Warehoused in darkness ‘til the madness ends.

Beloved, sacrificed by pride and fear —
After midnight, they bring the wounded here.

After midnight, we're gonna bring the wounded in.
After midnight, we're gonna roll the wheelchairs out.
We're gonna avoid coverage;
We're gonna keep it out of view.
Public eyes won't see what it is all about.
After midnight, we're gonna bring the wounded in.

It's on page S12650.

Here's the quote:

Look at what has happened. Hundreds of our service personnel have been killed, many more have been wounded, something the administration prefers not to talk about. The wounded are brought back after midnight, making sure the press does not see the planes coming in with the wounded. They were not talking about wounded. These are not a broken wrist or scratched leg. These are terrible wounds--lost limbs, lost eyesight, lifetime disabilities. I think of the soldier who fought bravely for the United States who is back in Walter Reed now finally getting his citizenship. He raised his right hand to take the oath. That was the only limb he could raise. He lost his other arm and both legs, like our former colleague, Senator Cleland, in Vietnam. These are terrible wounds.

We have lost more of our military since the President said the mission was accomplished, the war is over, than we did before. We have lost more of our soldiers since the President said: Bring it on. Unfortunately, they must have listened because they brought it on and more Americans have died since then than died before.

15. the aha moment
you are the aged light sparking in endless dark
and muted moments of silence
as when the green spring twig that that dropped its leaf in gift
falling earthbound to either mulch
or kindle in a flaming burst of illumination.

the proton vestige we call the star.

good find old gal!
