Elizabeth Cheney, Deferment Baby
How Dick Cheney dodged the Vietnam draft.
By Timothy Noah
Posted Thursday, March 18, 2004, at 2:09 PM ET

<excerpt>

Aug. 29, 1964: Dick and Lynne Cheney marry.

May 19, 1965: The Selective Service classifies Dick Cheney 1-A, "available immediately for military service."

July 28, 1965: President Lyndon Johnson says draft calls will be doubled.

Oct. 26, 1965: The Selective Service declares that married men without children, who were previously exempted from the draft, will now be called up. Married men with children remain exempt.

Jan. 19, 1966: The Selective Service reclassifies Dick Cheney 3-A, "deferred from military service because service would cause hardship upon his family," because his wife is pregnant with their first child.

July 28, 1966: Elizabeth Cheney is born.

Jan. 30, 1967: Dick Cheney turns 26 and therefore becomes ineligible for the draft.

Dedicated students of obstetrics will observe that Elizabeth Cheney's birth date falls precisely nine months and two days after the Selective Service publicly revoked its policy of not drafting childless husbands. This would seem to indicate that the Cheneys, though doubtless planning to have children sometime, were seized with an untamable passion the moment Dick Cheney became vulnerable to the Vietnam draft. And acted on it. Carpe diem!

8. Dick is known for his punctuality and efficiency.
Nine months and two days. Quick work - Lynne must not have been on the Pill, as it commonly takes a couple months before one becomes fertile again.

Or, maybe they conjured someone up to do the deed. This would have been about the same time they were filming Rosemary's Baby.

the Cheneys, though doubtless planning to have children sometime, were seized with an untamable passion

I could have gone my entire life without imagining Cheney having sex, but you've now robbed me of that opportunity. I was favoring a "spontaneous conception" model, but the image of a naked Dick is now forever burned into my mind :puke:

As tot he original topic, I'm sure it was just chance. I've never heard of anyone getting pregnant on demand like that. It took months to conceive my kids :)

11. Note that he got his daddy deferment before he was even a daddy.
From the dates we can see that he got his deferment when Lynne was just finishing her first trimester. Is that SOP? Given that not all pregnancies result in live births, it's a strange standard if it's the norm.

14. Are We Surprised?
Doesn't this sum it up though for the Republican Party? A bunch of draft dodgers, pointing fingers and blaming others for the very thing they did . I'm sorry but I don't remember reading such a story about Murtha, I don't remember there being a problem with John Kerry's service. Yet, the repugs want to flame and desecrate the very thing these gentleman fought for and the irony of it all is, after all their plans to avoid the draft and going to Viet Nam, they get to send our children, brothers, sisters, fathers, and mothers into war!

This is a harsh cruel world we live in ! :(

18. My, how times have changed
Edited on Mon Nov-21-05 06:51 PM by theHandpuppet
My father served in the South Pacific during WWII with a young wife and infant daughter at home.

When he was again called up for service in the Korean War, he was by then the father of two young daughters and my mother was pregnant with moi. In fact, he no sooner arrived at Yorktown than my Mom went into labor and my uncle took her to the hospital.

In the meantime, he was also the caretaker of his only sibling, a brother who was severely disabled. Later, he cared for not only that brother but two elderly parents and six children. When my mother became ill, he basically took over the care of us all in addition to working two jobs.

My Dad had always wanted to go to college and become a lawyer (he was a masterful writer and speaker) but responsibilities to his family and country led him down another path. Yet I never heard my Father utter a single word of complaint or disappointment. All that and he managed to proudly serve his country in two wars.

Now THAT was a man, Dick Cheney. Little wonder you can't recognize real men like Rep. Murtha, and the vile words you spew about patriotism and cowardice are an insult to the legacy of men like my Father. Shame on you, you despicable excuse for a human being.

Oh, and BTW -- I have a brother who is both a AF and Navy vet and he's a Dem. But most of all, Mr. Cheney, he is an American and ten times the man you will ever be.
