3. Charlie- THe Holy Family is a Chapel, a Church- it is not a sect
Many rich Catholics build their own chapels and churches. The Kennedys have several... Visit the old chateaux in Europe and you'll notice they all have private chapels. This is nothing new and nothing schismatic.

Mel is a traditionalist Catholic who prefers his mass in Latin- that does not make him a schismatic. He never left the Church and is free to have the Classical Traditionalist Mass celebrated in Latin if he prefers. There are 2 churches in my small city that have a Tridentine (Latin) Mass every Sunday- it's perfectly acceptable.

As far as his involvment with the possibly schismatic Society of Pope Pius X, the bans of excommunication on three of the four bishops ordained by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre were lifted long ago and Cardinal Castrillon Hoyos assured the traditionalists that the Vatican has allowed their continued use of the Mass of St. Pius V. As a matter of fact the Tridentine Mass is again being celebrated in Rome and many churches. In 1984, Pope John Paul authorized the use of the old rite at the discretion of diocesan bishops.

The SSPX, and all other traditional Roman Catholic priests and orders, says the Mass as it has been said for 2,000 years -- essentially unchanged, perhaps even in language, from the time of Christ. They have never been ex-communicated. Their arch-bishop was asked to stop ordaining priests (which he refused to do) but they are priests nonetheless and priests in good standing despite the theological dispute they're having with the Church. You would be surprised just how much support they have from the majority of practicing, devout Catholics who are appalled at the theological confusion rampant since Vatican II.

5. Mel doesn't think it is a mass unless an priest ordained before

Vatican II says it. Are you sure that isn't schismatic? I don't go along with antisemite stuff, but I don't think he is necessarily in good standing. There was anger and the excesses of some of the Vatican II remormers like closing schools and ill advised remodeling of old churches, but there isn't much enthusiasm for going back, and most Catholics would like more changes to the structure of the church, and would specifically like changes to the doctrines on birth control, and female priests. The Latin mass never stopped being celebrated in Rome. The majority of practicing Catholics may have some points of agreement with the traditionalist, but they more points of disagreement with the progressives. Very few would support all of it.

6. Thanks, Tinoire
That's my ignorance of Catholicism showing. So, Mel's offshoot enjoys the sanction and tolerance of the mother church? That surprises me, especially considering his dad regularly issues barbed commentary about the illegitimacy of the current Pope and Vatican doctrine (all of which Mel has characterized as "canonically sound").

9. Dan Leaves "Religion" Blank. Laura INGRAHAM Converted
In the first link, which the subjects themselves probably filled out for themselves, since Dan COULTER is SO humerous in listing her "Family Economic Status" as "Rich", she leaves paternal/maternal religion blank and lists nothing for herself, because she is SO "private". So everything there is suspect, especially since she lists her gener as "Female" and sexual preference as "heterosexual".

It was Laura INGRAHAM, crawler across bar floors and affair-mate of Asa HUTCHINSON, who converted to Catholicism sometime last year, but haven't found anything linking her explicitly to Opus Dei.

But check out the "Famous Catholics" link, where Oliver STONE is listed adjacent to some of the more INfamous ones. Also in the list are some other idiosyncracies, such as "Ronald (RAYGUN's) father" and "Elizabeth HURLEY's father" and "Elizabeth HURLEY's son".
