I can't send a decent LTTE because I put too much of my heart into it. They don't like that here in red country - it gets edited and I come across sounding like a fool.

But the stuff I have seen in recent weeks is great.

1. Two paragraphs, each with two sentences,
has gotten some of my letters published.

2. Practice, practice, practice
Even if your first draft is shitty (and maybe especially if it's shitty), right it over again. It's tough, but think about the ONE point you want to make. Two paragraphs, two sentences each, is a pretty good rule of thumb. When you pare it down to that, come up with a concluding sentence for the third paragraph that states your point in a nice declarative sentence.

You'll get the hang of it. Post a draft in the forums; there are a lot of real smart people hanging around here who will be glad to make constructive suggestions.

6. Our paper won't print political letters
if they mention anyone by name. We can write in about issues, but not about elected officials. When I wrote a LTTE last summer, they told me the only way they'd print it, since I mentioned *, was by putting it in a paid ad. So I did.
