Instead, the US favours an independent investigation into allegations that at least 173 Sunni Iraqi prisoners were mistreated by officials at an Iraqi ministry prison.
The US stance on the investigations comes after Iraqi Sunni representatives and political parties have voiced demands for an international investigation into torture claims. However, US government representatives made press statements stressing cooperation with the Iraqis on the probe.
According to the Thursday issue of the pan-Arab daily Al-Hayat, a US army chief whose name was not mentioned stated that the Americans will cooperate with the Iraqi forces in inspecting all prisons in Iraq.
