Bitter US debate on Iraq 'disturbing'-Army general

WASHINGTON, Nov 22 (Reuters) - The bitter battle in Washington over whether to quickly withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq is disturbing, but has not damaged U.S. military morale, a senior American Army general in Baghdad said on Tuesday.

"A precipitous pullout, I believe, would be destabilizing," Lt. Gen. John Vines, the second-ranking U.S. commander there, told Pentagon reporters in a teleconference from Iraq. He refused to set any timetable.

"Of course the debate and the bitterness is disturbing. But, after all, we are a democracy and that is what democracy is about ... people will have differences of opinion," Vines said.

"Certainly, soldiers are concerned about whether or not they enjoy the support of not only their elected representatives but the people. And they know that they have their support," Vines replied when pressed about morale among the 155,000 American in Iraq troops.

2. I'm guessing this guy got a call
I'm also guessing we are going to hear these comments repeated a lot in the right wing world.

3. At least the military understands what a democracy is even if the Pres
and VP don't.

4. I wonder if General Vines...
finds anything else "disturbing"? Like 2100 dead for oil. Like the corporate strip-mining of Iraq. Like an administration that lied about intelligence to "sell" the illegal invasion and occupation of a country that posed no threat to the US.

I find Lt. Gen. John Vines disturbing. And very probably disturbed.

5. When you stifle the debate before a war you only encourage
more strenuous debate during the war. The present atmosphere is also Bush and Cheney's doing. They took us to war without seeking the consent of the American people. As ye reap so shall ye sow. You are disturbed General - then aim it in the RIGHT direction.
