America's problem: MILITARISM
I going to make a foregone conclusion: Iraq is over, and America lost. Seems to me that * et al made a fatal tactical error: they fought the war that Al Queda expected. The mindset of Militarism ruled out the option that would could have afforded: to BUY the goodwill of the muslim world. Look at the minds that were changed by the help America rendered to the earthquake victims in Kashmir. Let's say that, instead of spending 300 billion dollars killing Iraqis and destroying our military, we'd have taken a 100 billion & built power stations, sewer systems, and clean water supplies for any muslim country that was willing to let us do it. And then we PR the fuck out of it.

Of course, this is wishful thinking now. There is no 100 billion to spend, and no muslim country would allow us to set foot on their soil. America must stop spending all of its money on the military. there are other ways to fight ideological struggles.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/militarism

<Militarism expounds that the foundation of a society's security is its military capacity, and claims that the development and maintenance of the military to ensure that capacity is the most important goal for that society. It consists of a preferential positioning of military considerations in policy by a nation or other political entity and preferential treatment for persons involved officially or tangentially with the military in service or supply.>

<Ideologically militarism consists of jointly supremacy, loyalism, extremism, emergency-protectionism, and nationalism or its minor form patriotism. Under the justification of potential application of force it asserts that civilian populations are dependent upon — and thereby subservient to —the needs and goals of its military. Common tenets include advocation of "peace through strength" as the proper method to secure the interests of society — and is expressed as one that overrides all others; including traditional precursory diplomatic relations and issues related to social welfare.>

3. That has "PNAC" written all over it.
Or PNAC has that definition written all over it.

They absolutely see the military as overriding diplomacy, social welfare, etc... Flex our "muscle," and all problems are solved.

I can't help thinking of these people as kids who were once bullied in the schoolyard, and now they want to send other people to fight simply because they "can," it makes them feel tough, and they're oblivious to the real consequences. They honestly seem to believe that our military is the key to world power, even domination.

4. but the lesson of vietnam was that it isn't
the key, that is. invasion & occupation is outmoded, because we are no longer to do the "dirty work" that domination entails. namely, horrific brutality. we COULD basically destroy every sunni city without mercy using a multitude of horrifying weapons, and basically terrorize the populace into submission.

but we won't because we like to think we will retain our souls.

5. Good point. It is one half of the problem. The other half is
allowing corporations to be more "equal" than citizens.

7. We live in a country where every politician

has to say "I support the troops" after every sentence.

Whatever that means - I have seen homeless vets panhandling.

9. The next time someone says, "I support the troops" WE ALL NEED TO
ASK, "HOW?"

As mopaul has pointed out, time and again, this is the most DISGUSTING piece of mendacity that we allow in this country.
