Replace Vietnam with Iraq or terrorists and it totally applies to today.

Stay for a while. We've got a brain drain going on at the moment and need all the sane perspective we can get.

8. I listened to Kerry on my ride home today. It is perfectly fitting
because I had just installed my new XM radio (bought XM for AAR but certainly liking all the channels), immediately turned it to Air America radio and heard Randy playing portions of Kerry's testimony. She also had someone call in that was present in the gallery on a high school trip and heard Kerry in person while he testified.

When you realize how young Kerry was when he uttered those words, how eloquent, how much he had seen and been through and still wanted to save others from the ordeals he experienced shows what a great president he would have been. And all the while, somewhere stateside - a drunk, cokehead, spoiled frat boy named Dubya was blowing off duty and getting by trading on Daddy's name and rich friends.

Listening to Kerry speak on such a heart rending subject had chills running up and down my spine and a lump in my throat. Must confess I had another one of those "if only..." moments. Those moments happen a lot.

FYI - I got the XM radio on the recommendation of someone here at DU. He/she/they/it posted a notice that XM was giving away free radios with a sign up for six months of service ($38.5 for three months - standard $12.95/mo) and an enrollment fee of $14.99. I LOVE XM RADIO. Thanks to all DUers who steered me to XM radio.

16. I love watching that myself

I saw a documentary a while back earlier this year called "Unfinished Symphony" which was great and they show Kerry's testimony and than the person carrying the camera talks to him about being in Lexington and whenever he speaks it's like poetry. It's like every word he said was chosen so perfectly. *sigh*

It still pisses me off so bad when rightwingers slam him and his medals. Especially if they never served themselves!

6. particularly those whose problem was that he protested
My husband's uncle a pro-Vietnam WWII vet surprised us by telling us in early summer 2004 by saying he had found and read Kerry's entire testimony - both his speech and his answers to the Senators. He then said that he now sees where he was coming from and he was enormously impressed by his intelligence and sincerity. He was looking at Kerry because he was wary about Bush. Ultimately he voted for Kerry.

I was an anti-war college student and had not remembered how incredibly concerned he was with returning soldiers not getting the care they deserved. I was impressed by his eloquence in 1971, but in re-reading it I was as impressed by how involved he had become in veterans issues and how knowledgable he was. I remember him being referred to as the "oldest" 27 year old and I can see why more now than then.

9. And very courageous to take the heat he got over that. Something else...
that does not get the mention it deserves his role in breaking Iran-Contra. That was his baby. He didn't get the glory because others took his work and presented it (because he was a new kid on the Senate block and that's how things get done on the Hill) but he was the driving force behind the investigation.

People should remember both his role in the ending of the Vietnam War and in Iran-Contra and just stop and think. It may escape notice of a lot of people around here, but it has not escaped the notice of Cheney and Bsh that Senator Kerry has issued a them a direct challenge. He's baiting them and I love it. Same man. And he's not changed one iota.

He toyed with them further on the Ed Schultz radio program where he bandied about the word "criminal" stopping just short of calling them a bunch of crooks. He didn't say it, but they know he meant it. He's toying with them like a cat with a mouse. This is gonna get good.

Prediction: we will have either a resignation or an impeachment before this all ends.

10. I hope you're right, _dynamicdems
about a resignation or an impeachment. I wish the entire Bush cartel would get the boot.

I am so glad that Kerry is speaking up and challenging Bushco the way he's been doing. He's becoming their most feared and hated nemesis. They're starting to focus their attacks on him above all other Democrats. I'm sure he loves it. As you said, he's baiting them.

The timing of all this couldn't be more perfect for Kerry. Bushco's problems came long enough after the election that Kerry felt free to speak out freely without being concerned he'd be accused of merely seeking revenge over the election.

11. Some downgraded what Kerry did in 1971, saying he wasn't much
in the anti-war movement.

But Nixon sure did hate him. Who else made the Nixon WH tapes?

And who else are Bush and Cheney mentioning by name? Well, except for Murtha and Reid. Good for them all.

12. I think they're
slacking off on Murtha now, or at least trying a different tactic to discredit him. Now they're acting condesending toward him, acknowledging that he's a war hero, etc., and giving him what amounts to "There, there, simmer down, grandpa" pats on the back. Most of their real attacks seem to be leveled at Kerry instead of Murtha, or even Reid, it seems to me. Kerry's in their face relentlessly. It's a beautiful thing to behold.

18. I remember listening to the part
of the Nixon tapes about him talking about Kerry and how he couldn't find anything on him to use and thus created the whole thing with John O'Neill. Ugh!

They are crooks waiting to be canned and no one is more qualified to do it than Kerry. Cheney is out of deferments.

He did that too and NOBODY wanted him too. Kerry has done so much more to stop terrorism than Bush could ever dream about doing.

20. I assume she got it from Pacifica.
For some odd reason the audio is 'clipped' in the National archive. Pacifica stores and saves everything. I donate $$$ every year to maintain their archives.

It was sooooo heartfelt and pure. It made me tear up.

21. I wish he would say the same thing today.
Back then he was unequivcally opposed to continuing the debacle in Vietnam (did he call for benchmarks to be set before withdrawing then, too?)

The answer today is the same answer it was then... all troops home now.
Nothing to accomplish by staying.
